If your large don't fly SWA

News flash for all you skinny people: you're shaped the way you are and we fat people are shaped the way we are largely because of genetics. Anyone who disagrees with this doesn't understand either genetics or differences in metabolism (a product of...surprise...genetics). Sure, exercise can have an effect on this

[/ QUOTE ]

While genetics obviously play a role, I wouldn't say obesity is 'largely' due to genetics. The epidemic of fatness in this country is 'largely' due to poor diet and lack of excercise! I had been a size 4 my whole life until bad airport eating and lack of excersice (sitting all day in this profession) has caused me to put on 15-20 pounds so I am a size 8 or 10. While I am still no where near that lady, my gain is a direct result of my own bad habits. Anyone who has ever seen people predisposed to being over weight taking responsibility for their bad habits and lack of excercise on "I lost it" (a show about the obese regaining their lives on Disc Health) can see genetics aren't 'largely' the reason they are so fat. Lifestyle choices are for 95%. I can attest to that from my own overweight mothers experience. As soon as I became sedentary like her, the weight piled on. (Genetics?!?) I am now getting off my own fat a$$ and joined a fitness program to get back to where I need to be. Excercise keeps me slim, even though genetically my family is fat. Mom eats bad or skips meals and never excercises and wonders why she can't shed 70 pounds.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

Since my BMI is 18.13 does that mean I can purchase 1/2 a seat or 3/4 a seat if I want to "stretch"? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

Well I'm 5'8 and weight 195-200lbs. Granted all of that extra weight is muscle. I work out like 3-4x a week.

I push myself to excerise regulary and eat healthy but it's cause well I don't want to get fat. I enjoy being healthy and having a flat stomach.

A friend of mine Rayshaun weighted was like 5'9 and 250-300lbs. of pure fat. He had issues with being gay and as a result ate his pains away.

Anyways he started to eat right and exercise and watch his calorie intake and today he is like 5'9 and like 140lbs. and looks wonderful.

Now not everyone will have results like him and become a bean pole. But I do have little sympathy for those who are overweight and simply complain.

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

How did I get drug into this! Just because I have 6% body fat? Don't discriminate against us skinny people!!

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

4 pages already. Geez.

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

I show 17.15 on the BMI. I had a free test this spring that showed my body to be 4% fat! My metabolism must be very ambitious.

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

that BMI thing is retarded (as are all online calculator ones) because it shows Max as having a 29.65 BMI which is borderline obese. None of these online ones actually take into account muscle weight or fun things like that.

anyway...continue

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

They are not supposed to take muscle into account. It is a Body Mass Index. It is understood that an olympian could be shown as overweight on the BMI.

If it had the capability to account for muscle, fat, and other properties in the human body, it would be called a Body Content Index instead.

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

Also, if anyone wants to do it themselves, here is the data I have for calculating it:

[ (Your weight in pounds) x (705) ] / (Your height in inches)*2

So if you are 150# and 6'0"...

(150 x 705) / (72)*2 = 20.4

Remember, do not take it too literally.

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

The BMI index is pretty worthless in my opinion...It doesn't take into account your build, just overall weight so it varies wildly. If you want a true measure of where you stand, you need to get a cheap ($4) skinfold caliper...take the required measurements from all over your body, and plug in the "parillac" formula. It will tell you very accurately how many pounds of fat and how many pounds of lean mass you have...you can then figure you body fat %. Or you could have yourself "hydrostatically" (underwater) weighed.

Avg. body fat % for a male - 15%...ideal is 6-12%, to really see your abs and get that ripped look, most guys have to get down around 6-8% I have to get down to about 5% to get mine to really rip out.

Avg. body fat for a female - 23%...ideal is 12-18%

Anything over 25% for a male or 30% for a female puts you at about an 80% increased risk for coranary heart disease, hypertension, many types of cancer, and all kinds of other health problems. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I've really been turning into a fitness and diet nut lately /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

...yea according to what my doctor said at my last check up I'm technically overweight for my height.

But I'm in good health and have a flat lean stomach. My body fat is prolly about 5-10%.

Normal weight for people my hieght is between 150-160lbs.

I weighted myself earlier at the gym and I weight exactly 200lbs.

I'm short and my weight is compact. I look exactly like an olympic gymnast. Only my upper and lower torso more evenly complement each other then a gymnast does.

If Kristie and Doug allow for after hours at NetworkJC I might dance and strip (I do need the flight money). You girls will be very excited...but I won't be. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

But aren't most male strippers, well 'ya know'? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

One of my favorites is "Big Gay Corey" who works on the Song side of the operation now. He's always saying 'Well HELLOOoooo, I'm a sharply dressed male flight attendant, what do you think I'm STRAIGHT or something?'

Whenever you ring the cabin interphone, he picks up the intercom and says "Hello! Big gay Corey here!" Some of the older guys get a little weirded out, but hey man, good people are good people!

Yea...all the charts, and doctors advice is worthless for those of us trying to pack on muscle...supposedly I shouldn't ever get over 200lbs at 6'4" with my frame to stay "fit". My goal is to get up to about 230-240lbs and keep my 5% body fat for that Dolph Lundgren physique. Packed on 30lbs of muscle so far in around 1 year...only about 40 to go! I think...no I KNOW it's a helluva lot harder to gain lean mass than to lose weight!

People that say they can't change their body or blame it on genitics are just lazy! It is a lot of work...a new lifestyle really, but it CAN BE DONE! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/spin2.gif

Nick check your #'s again. I come up with:

150*750 = 105750 (and that's a weird coincidence huh?)

divide that by 72*2 (=144) and I get 734.375 - not 20.4!

Scared the heck out of me when my BMI came out to be 1255!
