If you oppose user fees...

Please don't make the argument that these user fee's are fair - at least until the government adds a section to the tax forms that reads,
"Please check the box next to the public services you use... []Local Bus, []Public School, []Amtrak, []Whatever-name-of-spacecraft-on-its-way-to-Pluto-for-useless-research, etc" and taxes me based off my selected usage. :insane:

And aren't we ALREADY paying??

How many people here that fly GA aircraft still fly on the airlines for certain trips and pay the already imposed taxes?

Its like Frog said, you can't "pick and choose" which taxes you want to pay. i.e. "Why should I pay to fix the potholes in the roads? I don't own a car or ride a bus!"

I think the example Phil Boyer used was something to the flavor of:
"I pay 39cents to mail a letter to the other side of town. Someone else in Alaska pays the same 39cents to mail a letter to Florida. Why am I paying more to subsidize the person in Alaska's mailing costs?????"

That's why it's EXTREMELY important that we elect people who will be responsible, not who will promise us the most stuff. Elections lately have become a race to see who can offer the most giveaways. (And that goes for BOTH sides of the aisle, unfortunately) We need to elect people who understand that government isn't there to fill every need for us.

Whose fault is that - the politicians for giving the people what they want, or the people for wanting it in the first place?

Socrates had some pretty poor opinions on democracy, simply because he felt the collective was too self-interested and ignorant to govern themselves. Perhaps he was right.

I think we're getting a tad off topic, but no, I don't buy that. There's been no better system ever invented.
