If You Crash Your Plane...Don't Blog About It...

So I read an article about the C-172 that put down in a field because of weather. Doing a little bit of research it looks like the guy is not IR. Looking at the flight path and weather, if he in fact was NOT IR, then he was an idiot and risked killing his wife. Of course, I could be wrong. Here is the article:

Now since the feds are probably looking into this, I would suggest that his wife NOT post about it on her blog. Just saying...

I will be curious to see what the investigation reveals on this one!

I was raised with the "three Ses". Shoot, Shovel, and Shut the hell up. At least the last applies here. Glad they made it.

And this is precisely why me and my passengers ALWAYS wear the should belts.

For the crashing part or for the pic that the wife put on line? The pic itself doesn't indicate a violation of the FARs. We can't assume that they are "moving on the surface, taking off, or landing".

Well sure, riding along with no shoulder belt is totally legal. However, putting it on right before augering in is something I'd rather not ever have to do in that situation.

That is true. I am guilty about taking off the shoulder harness pretty quick after takeoff...it's damn uncomfortable. Speaking of which...in the C-5 accident up in Dover a few years ago, the only guy to not have back injuries was the instructor FE that was standing up during the accident sequence. Go figure, eh?

I think that picture was taken when they went up a few days earlier, the weather looks pretty good and if I wasn't IR and got stuck in the weather, I don't think I would be smiling like he was!

From the blog :
"but also I’m not sure I process the adequate vocabulary to express the enormity of the situation both Husband and"

I think that is a fair statement.

(I know it is a cheap shot)

Personally I don't see the problem with her blogging about this. The FAA probably already knows more about it and her husbands credentials than she does.

But randomly blogging about breaking FARs...always a bad choice that goes down smooth and chased by a nasty hangover.

If he wasn't busy 'checking in, with you' this whole event could have been averted.

And perhaps if he retracted the flaps during his flare, the hill he was landing on would have turned into a paved runway!

Bed time, someone else can cover for me now!

There's an interesting exchange between the pilot of the plane, and a CFII in the comments section. The pilot explains how he got into the situation.

I have flown a few older 172s that only have lap belts. This picture is not proving any violation. I never did feel very comfortable without and the shoulder strap though.

It's got the clip to hold the shoulder belt, but if they don't want to wear shoulder belts in cruise, so be it. Agreed that you don't want to need to fumble for it when you really need it, though. It would be a shame to forget that item on, say, a forced landing in the mountains.
Actually, the most miserable belts I've worn are the ones on the newer 172s that keep sawing away at my neck due to the angle of the mounting brackets.

That picture IS proving a violation, actually.

A fashion violation for that god-awful 80s-looking collared shirt he's wearing.

That and if he used pitch for airspeed and power for altitude, exclusively.
