If You Can't Run With The Big Dawgs . . .

Good stuff, Lloyd!

however I don't believe the one in the middle was attenuated because it was still painting returns/ground behind it.
It's possible to get a return even if it's attenuating. Generally, anything that is painted beyond intense echos shouldn't be trusted though. If it's strong enough to show up beyond the intense stuff that is already there, it's probably more intense than it looks on the radar.

I learned very quickly atc does a not so great job with wx avoidance. It's not their fault, it's just their equipment. Obviously going visually around wx is always the #1 choice but that isn't feasible at all times (like at night or in embedded cb type clouds). Hence the need for wx radar.

PS In the image below who can spot the attenuation?

Somebody was shooting the ILS to 23:whatever: At least all that stuff was blowing away from the airport.

Lloyd: Great read about my stomping grounds. Do you fly into MKC a lot? I teach there.

I think that was what was orginally planned, but at that point we were being vectored for 18R (if memory serves).

I shot an ILS there once last week in 2000RVR due to rain. Holy hydroplanning batman!

Next time you get a visual for 23 look for the blue water tower to the west just outside of ATELL. Look down the right, rock your wings, and wave. If you're lucky I'll run outside in my boxer shorts and wave back.

as of this time I will no longer accept any approach to R/W 23. thank you

Wha-wha-what?

I'm here daily! I normally fly into MKC at about 0630 and I sit there all day, until about 1630. For the last month or so, I've been basically living here, flying to CPS at about 1800 and getting back in at about 0145.

Lunch?

Lloyd,

I flew the exact same route in the same kind of weather over 30 years ago. One night I was passing just south of my boyhood home (about 80 east of MKC) and saw a big lightning bolt hit about where the house was. Found out the next day it burned a hole in the side of the house and knocked my dad out of bed onto the floor.

Yesterday I brought 250,000# of freight into JFK. Dodging weather again. It's pretty much the same, just a bigger dawg.

Whoya fly for flyover?

Yeah, used to be around here a bit more. Then got the job from hell - crazy schedule and if you so much as looked at the 'net during work hours...they were all over you. Just went back to my old company, promoted to manager...not bad! I'll try to hang out a bit more here.

Lloyd - definitely on lunch! Sending you a pm.

Hey Lloyd are you in Gateway now?

That sucks for that BBQ run I had planned.

I am gonna go over to Columbia though sometime this month, maybe we will cross paths there.

Or LGA or PHL or DCA/IAD or CLT or ATL or ORD or.... well, you get the point. I've only been doing the 121 thing for a year now and I can't even count the holds. Thank god for 10 mile legs!
Exactly.

Wow, a real hold? Who does those? :)

everytime houstin is landing on the 8's or they close DAS and STROS to arrivals to accomidate departure deviations for wx, houston is holding. heck, 2 weeks ago i had to hold at 2 seperate locations coming into houston. reasons vary from "saturation", to "weather over the field" to "approach lost power, again".

Still in KC, for at least another 5 or 6 days . . . so, the window is still open!

Besides, I'm here everyday after that anyway - I spend 10 hours at MKC daily!
