If we get a job in the states, will the company help us acquire a work visa?

I'm from Australia and I've considered looking for work in the States once I finish my studies. Would I have to get a work visa first or would the hiring company help me acquire one?

Most people acquire a visa through other means, that said some companies will sponsor but it is an expense, so you don't often hear of it in aviation.

What stage are you at in your training?

I've never heard about it in aviation, but usually companies sponsor visa's when they can't find someone to meet their needs here in the country. (No shortage of pilots here fortunately), although I would be vigilant towards any aviation company that would offer a visa in exchange for less then appropriate compensation.

This might be able to help you a bit more : http://canberra.usembassy.gov/e3visa/qualifying.html

Thank you both for your insight.

I have completed a year of my Bachelors in Aviation and am currently completing my PPL.

Well to put some more detail, a handful of flight schools might consider employing you as a CFI but would expect a year+ contract to recoup the expense of the process.

Some schools have say Korean students on J1 visas where they instruct for free to gain experience but that works for their program, not for a green card.

It would be easier if you have specialist skills or work for a multinational to get hired in another job and work on your ratings on the side.

Unless you're REALLY well qualified (insert whatever category of "OMG" experience you'd like here- mil test pilot/ development engineer and test pilot/ former astronaut, etc), good luck getting a US company to sponsor you for a visa and work permit to be a line pilot.

If you ever did, I'd expect a long term employment contract to be part of the equation.

You'd more than likely fare better at finding a cute American girl to marry who likes the Aussie accent in order to get a green card.....

You can also get a green card by investing a lot of money in the US that creates jobs (and by a lot I mean $1,000,000). There is also the green card lottery, known as the diversity visa lottery, held once a year.
