"Ice Pilots" New Reality TV Show

Finished watching through the finale. A couple of observations and comments.
First, at the end of the season it says the "rampies" that seemed to never get any flight time moved on, which was probably a good move, since it seems like they have the aircraft staffed and the only way to really move up was a old timer moving out, but the seasoned pilots there were only in their 30's.

Next, please correct me if I'm wrong, but the narrator went on and on about how the CL-15's were not only "meant for summer" whatever that means, the DC-3,4 and C-46 didn't have de-icing either. The narrator also mentions how the cl-15s were VFR only aircraft, and then 10 seconds later there's a shot of them in IMC in icing. I mean come on, this is Canada not Zimbabwe. Either it was an IFR airplane or not, which means they broke regs on camera or they didn't, and since I assume they did not, don't go on and on about how it's a VFR aircraft.

I know they are in Canada, and i have no idea what the regulations are there but with all the flight into known icing under what would be considered part 135 and 121 ops, in the airplanes they are flying, is again against regulations, in this case, 135.227 i believe - but yes, Canada so these don't apply directly, but I have a hard time believing it's that much different.

So I guess my question is, is this TV blowing things so out of proportion they no longer reflect the reality that they are based on, does Canada have no where near the regulations we do down here, and if none of the above, wtf are they doing?

that is what I've been wondering. . .with most of the airplanes not cert for known Icing, why even buy these things in the first place?!?! it is Canada, isnt it pretty much known icing all the time?!?!?!?!?

I still really, really, really love this show!! Thanks again Pat!

I wondered the same thing myself. I can only guess they would never fly an aircraft into known ice on camera if it were illegal. I can only posture to hypotheses:
1) How prevalent is ice at temperatures of -40 to -50? It would seem to me that at these temps, any moisture has already crystallized.
2) Can you get into trouble for flying an aircraft into known ice in uncontrolled airspace?

I really, really enjoyed watching all of these episodes. Any ideas on when the next season is going to surface?

This is a great show - just finished episode 11.

I can't believe the guys on the ground weren't in radio contact with the Turkish pilots doing the touch and go's - giving them a "check gear down" call on final.

Touch and go's with a retractable gear airplane and swapping pilots (unfamiliar with the aircraft) during the circuits isn't a good mix.

While I have no experience to base this on, I would imagine that at those temps, ice is very rare.
