Ice Bridging

Until that one time you either forget to fill it.

TKS works great, better In fact than boots until the fluid runs out. Then you are no different than any non ice certified airplane out there.

Well, I treat it like fuel. You don't run out. :)

To add on, if someone if flying around in severe icing, they need to look at the definition of "severe icing".
This. By definition, severe icing is beyond what your equipment can handle.

Also, something I've always wondered...does something the size of the Q400 still not have enough extra bleed air for hot wings? I mean seriously, the fact that in 2011 we're still putting boots on a 50 seat airliner seems a little bit ludicrous to me.

i think if you run your tank dry in flight you probably didn't try hard enough to get out of the icing. not saying it can't and doesn't happen, but the pilot should have made a drastic change to the flight if they get in that situation.

That is a valid argument. But you'll never run out of bleed air to operate wing heat of boots.

LOL, my younger? TKS rocks, plain and simple. Works when you hit the switch, unlike boots where you hit it, then wonder how well it work "on this cycle". Then add a few more cycles, and you are down airspeed no matter what airframe.
All the systems (air, boots, tks) are there to get you out of ice, not cruise through it. Unless you're Chuck Norris.

exactly!

i really really like my TKS system on the 'van, so far it has safely got me out of ice that would have possibly taken a booted van down.

I have never seen any kind of different reply from Simone who uses TKS . And maybe it's because I haven't used it myself but anything like that where you only have a limited time you can use it just seems silly to me. It might work great when it works, but there bass been times even out west where ARC has had no choice but to stick me in it if I wanted to get down for extended periods of time where I have thought to myself "I wonder if I would run out of fluid if I had to do more than one approach." I just can't trust something that has a lifespan like TKS. Sometimes there is no other option but to get icy. I have a been stuck in it for 15-20 minutes at a time in a Chieftain trying to get home with no other option because I had hills to get over or oxygen requirements for pax.

it all boils down to planning. granted you can't plan for everything, but if you leave expecting CAVU and have no outs when it is winter time, etc etc, then you just set yourself up for failure.

see on my normal route, I have 2 really good outs on my route of flight, if I need to divert but don't, then I have no one to blame but myself for ending up with no ice protection.

We run a massive derate, and have issues keeping oil temps warm enough in the Q. We def. "Could"run hot wings, bt I'm pretty sure the common type gets in the way.

That is stupid. Thanks dehavilland/airline industry.

You say there is a limited amount of time you can use TKS, sure... but there is an even more limited amount of time you can use boots in icing. Have you ever been in constant icing for 40+ minutes in a caravan with boots that you can blow an unlimited amount of time? I bet you would be happy to trade them for the 2-3 hours you can get out of TKS at that point.

My experience in the caravan is that everytime you blow the boots it is a little bit less effective than the last time.

At the risk of stating the obvious...fly what you have, and deal with it. *Every* system has strong points and weak points. A plane is not superior or inferior based on boots or TKS. It just is what it is.

Would I like to fly in a pressurized twin turbine aircraft? Sure. Can I make a flight safely in my Cessna 140? Sure. It's all about understanding what you have and not getting in over your head.

The FAA and NASA claim that one of the reasons that ice bridging isn't a concern anymore is due to new boot design. Problem is we're still flying around aircraft with old boot designs. TKS i think is smart for props. For jets like the Hawker it's moronic. I never had a problem with it but I've never had a problem with any heated wing either.
I've seen ice bridging in the Metro and Baron.
