ICAO 2009 Journal #6 - Now Hiring.

I remember the looming shortage when I first started training for my private in 1991. Then there was the coming shortage of 1999. The shortage of 2005. None of them materialized.

But Kit Darby swore to me that this time it's going to be for real!!!!!

Think many of us need to be reminded of the scope of ICAO. There very well may not be a domestic pilot shortage, but don't be ignorant to the international environment which - so long as the numbers end up being accurate - there will be a shortage of international pilots.

I'm delusional, then. There will never be a shortage of pilots. Like was already mentioned, in 3 months you can churn 'em out. All you need is about a 6 month lead time, and there'll be plenty. There may be a shortage of QUALIFIED pilots for the position, but as long as places like ATP, JetU, etc are around and people can get financing, there won't be a pilot shortage. It's been "right around the corner" for decades. Back in the "Big Boom of 06-07" I don't think regionals were saying "Oh man! What are we gonna do! We just don't have enough applications!" Even low tier regionals like Pinnacle and Colgan had plenty of applicants. All they had to do was lower the mins to those that were applying.

I don't think easy financing is still around or will be returning anytime soon.

True. But, a lot of these carriers from the developing world have no problem taking a guy from a village that has never driven a car and sticking him in a cockpit. It is just a matter of training and that can be had relatively cheaply.

Not as easy as it was before, and that's not a bad thing. However, $25 on ATP's website will likely get you a few hits on institutions that will happily lend you money for an increased interest rate. Last I heard, even in this environment, ATP wasn't in danger of closing their doors or stopping the career program.

How does the economy factor into "the pilot shortage?" Any predicted pilot shortage is going to be dependent on the economy, both the US and world. It seems like as the economy shrinks, slots of retiring pilots won't be refilled as schedules are also cut back. A poor economy will ruin a shortage in any industry. This is why I'm not believing any shortage.
As far as the economy goes, who knows when that will bounce back, if it does. Some economists say we are bouncing back now, some say we are in a small rebound before we sink further. We can speculate, in reality I would like a shortage but I'm not betting on it.

At risk of unveiling my epic nerdiness, I'd like to make a comparison. I used to play an online video game called "Star Wars Galaxies". In the original code, there wasn't a way to be Jedi right off the bat. But, a lot of people wanted to be Jedi. I'm not sure if the ability existed originally, but people eventually figured out how to make their toon "discover" that they were one with the force and so on...

So, the work to become a Jedi was virtually endless. I calculated if I played an hour a day, it would take me almost two years to become a Knight. That was after I had been playing the game for months and trying to get my toon to discover their force powers.

ANYway...despite the many challenges that were supposed to limit the amount of Jedi in the SWG universe

There was definitely NEVER a shortage of Jedi.

Ever

Nerd. :)

Is there any regulatory requirement that requires US airlines to hire US citizens? If there ever was a REAL shortage of US pilots, maybe all these Indian kids we are training will be there to pick up the slack.

You can probably find the answer before I can.

I know in my new hire class we had one citizen of Canada, but I actually think he held dual citizenship.

My sim partner is Canadian. Canadian passport, green card, etc. AFAIK, if you've got a green card and are legal to work in the US, you can get a job at a US airline. The airline won't SPONSOR you for a work visa or citizenship, but if you've got it through other means, then I think legally they can't turn you away.

We had a prof who was former Skywest and Canadian. Had a green card and all that, I guess he got citizenship here after he married his wife.

As far as I knew the only time a green card doesn't cut it for employment is for most security clearances, and obviously there is no security clearance (right now) for airline pilots, and I was almost sure that all this TSA training stuff for non citizens didn't all out restrict any sort of 121 training.
