What in the world?!?! Why are all the taxiways two letters rather than just using A, B, C...Z and then AA, BB, CC, DD like every other airport I've seen (or even A2, A3, A4 etc)? Does the first letter (N, S, E, W) intend to point out where in the airport the taxiway is? (And if so, why F way up north?) Is this just an instance of the "Texas does it the right way" philosophy in action or what?
 
It actually works pretty well and in my opinion is easier than AA BB etc. Also consider that you'll be given a ground freq which for the most part only works the N, E, S, or W side of the field. After a few trips it started making pretty good sense for me.
 
At DFW the East-West taxiways go A-Z from south to north except that Yankee and Zulu are switched so that Yankee is the furthest north. Coincidence?
 
I'm with the car man on this one. IAH is a a mess for pilots who aren't familiar with it.

It's likt "Hotel Alpha Bravo Charlie Sierra Yankee" so I'm trying to find a route using H-A-B-C-S-Y to the ramp, but it's really HA-BC-SY or something similar.

I haaaaaate IAH. :)
 
At least IAH taxiways go in straight lines. EWR has the same thing but those damn things meger together, split off. Ugh. Take "alpha alpha to alpha via bravo bravo to the cargo ramp" YOU WANT ME TO DO WHAT!
 
Always thought the weirdest thing about IAH is having to contact clearance after pushing and letting them tell you to call ground--though I'm sure they've got some reason for it.

BTW, the TX taxiway system was developed as part of Bush's "No Pilot Left Behind in TX Program"... rarely heard of.. it was to promote general secondary education for TX based and TX transient pilots.. it allows them to further develop their use of the English alphabet. It is also convient to ensure that only true Texan's safely navigate on TX soil by drivin' all non-texans running and screaming for their lives and vowing never to bid a line that takes them to TX again.
