Ahem

Again -- I'm not saying I wouldn't live in Houston; if there was a reason to such as a job. But I think it doesn't compare to some other cities in this country in regards to things that are being discussed in this thread.

Houston has a huge cultural life to it actually. World class museums, music, and shows make it only second to NYC to the amount of cultural events going on in the city.

I've been to every major city in the USA several times except for Miami and there are a lot of other more well-traveled people on this forum and I can think of a dozen other places that are more culturally vibrant than Houston. :)

Seattle. Boston. Washington DC. Philadelphia. Chicago. San Francisco. Los Angeles.

Some of these places are generations older than Houston and have a downtown area to prove it.

First of all, you should make it a point to hang in Miami a little - love the people and the city. Great town.

In fact, I love all of the places on your list and have spent significant time in them. Houston does have a good cultural scene though - lots of shows, some great art museums and other things. I believe the largest employer in town is the medical center - lots of highly educated people that demand an interesting cultural scene. There is a ton of money in Houston. Do you think all these people with money are like the Clampetts on the Beverly Hillbillies? These people and their money demand a certain amount of culture and it can be quite good. Many people think Houston is like Urban Cowboy (and it was - and frankly, I wish it were again. It rocked then). In reality, Houston is pretty diverse and tolerant (I would rank it second behind Austin). The USA's first fully devoted AIDS hospital was in Houston - not many know this because of anti-Texas redneck bias. Give Houston a chance - may surprise you.

Oh believe me I agree.

There is no denying that Houston has it's share of interesting, unique organizations and facilities.

I just don't think it's second in the USA. Top ten, maybe.

Top ten for sure, but no - not second.

NY
Washington
Boston
San Francisco
Philadelphia
Chicago
Houston
Los Angeles
Seattle

That is how I would rate the cities based upon history, culture items.

Actually I think Austin might be the least diverse major city in texas. It's 70% white, 10% black, 20% hispanic. It's easy to "tolerate" people that aren't there :sarcasm:

Houston is about 50% white, 25% black, 25% hispanic. :)

I currently live in the Houston area my self since March. What everyone else says about housing prices is right. We live in Spring (N. Houston) and are very happy here. Although I would like to live somewhere with less heat and humidity and snow in the winter, Houston weather is wonderful from Oct to June. I think the city has alot to offer in every way that matters to folks. Like any big city, you take the good with the not-so good, learn when and how to avoid the worst of the traffic, find the big city things you enjoy doing. The people here are friendly (at least in my part of town) and I appreciate that.

I hope to move on to Colorado someday, but if I had to stay here, I could be very happy here.

I think Austin is very diverse....I mean, you have all different types of birkenstock sandles. Then there's always the Phish vs Dave Mathews Band fight. Then there's huge diversity in the variety of Barak Obama stickers.

Really Austin is more "tolerant." Or it's supposed to be. But in this election cycle I think I've noticed that so called "liberals," actually are some of the most intolerant people around. If you don't agree with them they'll be the first to try to shout you down. Mind you I'm not even a right wing loon, I don't particularly like Bush, never voted for him etc. But it's just BS to say the left is accepting, they accept certain behaviors that are common among their base but hate those who partake in other activities (hunting, religion etc.).

I was not precise...by diverse I meant "really weird and liberal". This post is right on.

I want to thank everyone for their insight, but I have taken an A&P job in the Phoenix area at a full service FBO. They have maintenance, charter(2 citations and 4 king airs), and a flight school. Much much higher pay than any of the regionals, and a discount on plane rental. Oh well, no travel benefits for me.

Travel benefits aren't all they are made out to be. (except maybe international)

I bought tickets to vegas last year. This year I relied on travel bennies and couldn't make it.

Make more cash and buy a ticket when you want to go someplace is a much better deal.

Oh, and what happened to that engine in your avatar? N1 rotor burst? I assume its a netjets Excel?

No rotor burst, just a fan replacement/on wing hot section at the Wichita Service Center. Now that I look at it, with the small size of the picture the engine does look mangled. I did three weeks TDY in Wichita while I was working at the Long Beach Service Center. I was stupid to leave Cessna. The absolute best company I've ever worked for. When someone offers you a job that sounds to good to be true, it probably is. "Oh sorry we're shutting down our 145 repair station, oh and Cessna's now on a hiring freeze, so you won't be able to go back there. Were very sorry though."
