IAD Arrival Question

I feel like a dummy asking this, but i've actually never flown an arrival with anything other than "expect to cross at altitudes".

So tomorrow I will be coming into IAD from the West. I am expecting the SHNON2.

http://155.178.201.160/d-tpp/1203/05100SHNON.PDF

SHNON gives the sign to cross at 9000 and KEWPY at 7000. I take it that I have to cross those fixes at that altitude.

So what is the keyword that I am looking for? Does "cleared for the SHNON TWO" imply I will descend on my own to meet these altitudes, or do I need to hear "Descend on the SHNON TWO".

Thanks.

Facepalm that I have to write this =(

What mike said. I can't remember the last time potamac app told me to descend via anything. Usually they just tell you to cross XXX at YYY.

Descend via. As the guidance states, there is a difference between laterally and vertically navigating a STAR. With newly designed runway transitions (check out Boston's KRANN 1), I've also been hearing a lot of "cleared to descend via the XX Runway Transition."

Ok forget IAD, if you are descending to cross a fix at 11000 and the controller gives you 4000 prior to reaching 11000, do you still have to cross the fix at 11000 before descending to 4000 or can you descend below 11000 prior to the fix?

Whenever I get a conflicting clearance I just ask for clarification. "Center do you still need N69BJ to cross FARVA at 8,000"

David:

In the US: any altitude clearance trumps previous restrictions UNLESS the controller states "comply with XXXXX."

ICAO: you still need to comply with your arrival's restrictions.

Anywhere: do what MikeCWeb does:).
