I *heart* hotels

zmiller hit it, great skiing. I'm pretty much a hack of a skiier right now, and I want to change that. I figure the best way to do that is get a pair of powder ski's and move to Park City. I'll have my friend Austin (instructed at Taos and the bird for like 3 seasons), Emily (2 seasons at Deer Valley) and Chuck (a true player) to kick my ass into shape over a winter or two.

It's true, there's nothing worse than a 3.2 microbrew--it just seems wrong. May as well be O'Douls. But that's what the "social club" and State Liquor Stores are for.

Jtrain or anyone else who knows SLC skiing--any input on which resort would be best/cheapest for a quick (5-6hr) day?
 
I'm sure that Chuck (ophir) would tell you the Canyons, I believe he told me once he could be sitting on a 2 hour callout on reserve, be at the top of Canyons, rip down, go home, shower/shave/get dressed and still make it to the airport.

Never domestic, but some of the International hotels, definitely! The Penninsula in Manila (heck, even the Westin in Manila), the Westin Raffles in Singapore, the Sheraton and Regent hotels in Fiji are a few that come to mind immediately, and there are a LOT more!

Brighton. Go to Artic Circle and order the burger combo, ask for the coupon and its 50% on Wed.

Nice. A captain and I walked into the wrong villa on the island of Anguilla once, and it was occupied....only the the occupants weren't, um, sleeping.

the raffles in singapore is amazing. i remember sitting in the lobby waiting for the rest of my group and seeing many flight crews checking in. international trips do it right! i dont know if you have been to equador but the oro verde hotel in guayaquil is amazing. i have seen many crews check in there as well.
 
Best hotel I've been to? Swissotel in Berlin. Best deal? I can't remember the name of the hotel, but it was near the Grand Platz in Brussels. We're talking a hospitality room with loads of hors d'oevres (sp), aparatifs and beer, hot food, and one of those "automagic" espresso machines that'll even froth milk for you.
 
There were many, many instances of people walking in on crew members in their rooms.

Morale of the story, when you're in your room, always engage the deadbolt lock AND the u-bolt. That way if someone else happens to be issued a key to your room, they won't actually get in!

I look back on that and I am glad I wasn't called. The problem is that damn employee bus. I can get to the airport in 20 minutes but it sometimes take another 25 mins to the crew lounge from there.

I think the Canyons is a good bet for a short layover. you might consider Solitude too.

I might in a year when my commitment is up, Chuck, but most likely I'll transfer to the SLC base and hold a halfway senior 99 run there. I told the company I'd give them 12 months from my checkride (early November), and I'd be a fool to pass up the oppertunity to get some turbine PIC time before I left here. I figure Chieftain for a year, 99 for a year, Metro for a year and I'll have mins for whatever major carrier I want to head towards.

I am taking your advice on something else though; I'm ditching my east coast ski's and snagging some good powder ski's this season. I'll probably come out to Snowbird in like January to demo some ski's, you got any weekends off that month?
 
Well we have the NAASF (www.naasf.com) race here on Jan 14-20. But I'm planning on flying weekends and using my mid-week Bird pass on my days off. If you get here though, call me.

Well, Doug, you coulda stayed with me the other night in MCI. When I pulled the covers back I nocticed that the sheets were ruffled up and upon further inspection noticed that there were short curly hairs in the bed. And it wasn't a rat hole either. Ahhh....the glamor of it all.

It's 3.2 by volume not by weight like it is in CA. I think the end result is it really isn't all that bad. It tastes alright, anyway. Plus all you have to do is go to a bar and they'll serve you up the good stuff.
