Airline flying is a great challenge if done properly. Of course it's an awesome responsibility with all of those people back there. Once I had kids of my own, I started viewing the responsibility a little bit differently. Of course, I always took it seriously...but there are those in the back of the airplane who are counting on you to be on the top of your game everyday, every flight, every leg.
You interface with customers, flight attendants, gate agents, weather, regs, airplanes, performance issues, atc issues, etc, etc,. The pilots are the glue that ties all of these factors together and makes it work. It's challenging...and you can do it in an A+ fashion which is really rewarding...or just show up and spend your career going thru the motions. I know which one is more satisfying to me.
One thing I really find fascinating about airline flying is that I could show up for work one hour before scheduled departure, meet a captain I've never seen before in my life and will probably never see again, fly the airplane in a coordinated manner that would indicate we've flown together for decades, and five hours later end up 2500 miles from where we started...safely flying 250 people to their destination.
