I mean, why would you?
For me, it would be settling for less than I have dreamed of.
Especially after working at America West (maybe that wasn't the best example :)), I don't want to be involved in that lifestyle...that kind of business environment.

So. I (as the final career move) want to:

Fly "corporate", Fly checks, Fly the ditch, Be an airshow pilot, Fly seaplanes, Demo for an aircraft broker, Ferry GA airplanes, Fly for a mission, Set up a business in multiple locations just so I have to fly to them. Grow my a/c leases and just fly 'em for fun...

I believe that's one of the Ten Greatest Lies in Aviation.

1) "I don't want to work for the airlines"

some others are:

2) "I'm from the FAA and I'm here to help you"
3) "This plane? Oh yeah, I've got 50 hrs in it."

and so on...

I said #1 a few times in my career, and I'm sure others have as well :)

I dunno about the first statement, I think the same way, but deep down there's always a little intrigue (sp) about flying the great gig in the sky.

I TOTALLY agree with the latter! Airshow performer would be the dogs bullocks! I'm sure many would agree! I know quite a few business owners that expand for just that reason! That's what I'm hoping for.

Good for you! Believe me you are not alone. I'm convinced that a lot of aspiring "airline pilots" deep down are more caught up in the "allure" of doing the bag drag through the terminal in their spiffy uniforms, than actually into the flying itself.

Of course it doesn't help that society in general's idea of a professional pilot is an airline pilot. They don't get it that there is other hard working pilots out there, and if they hear that you're not an airline pilot, they have no way of relating to what you do. And if you don't fly for an airline, then they always have a friend/uncle/obscure relative that does.

"Fly 'em for fun", why that sounds like the best kind of flying there is!

I might agree we may have all had a 'dream' of doing airline stuff, but maybe some have seen enough of the industry to be turned off by it.

slush i'm with ya, but who knows how the future will be. Erby Diddle really did me in, I actually didn't want to fly when I was there. For a couple years I would like to fly for AirServ or Pactec or out in some country helping people. You know, be changed, and help people.

Keep in mind though that some of the stuff you see (forums in particular) will be the vocal minority. People tend not to complain when they're content :)

Have you either? Judging from your profile that says you're just starting to fly, I believe the answer is no.

I have, however, sat in the cockpit #12 for takeoff. Is that worth anything?

After doing all these airshows the past year and being "static," I have really thought of slapping someone's logo on a pitts for a couple years.

Right now my only performance is the group "slow-by"
 
That airline uniform is something else, but I too am turned off by the thought of flying for the airlines. That is why I left a big flight school to pursue a management degree elsewhere and receive my commercial part 61. I hope someday I can own a small flying service and fly for myself, but I will always look up at the sky and wonder what it is like to be in the left seat of a big airliner.

I was #36 in LaGordia the other month and couldn't help but smile when I thought about how much over block I was going to be...

I'll take waiting in sequence over waiting at the gate any day...

You're on to me! ;) Seriously I decided that I wanted to fly professionally because I have been in love with aviation ever since I can remember. The allure of the four stripes on my sleeve and the title Captain was an added bonus when I decided I wanted to fly professionally, but the more I thought about it, I am more than willing to do any type of flying. Now I am even considering transferring to an engineering degree and becoming a test pilot. But I'll probably stick to transport flying. I have flying goals that some might consider "far out" and "unachievable," so I usually don't mention them in pilot forums for fear of being laughed out.

YOU ARE AWESOME!

Everyone has their thing, the thing that makes them happy. I recently decided that the lifestyle of an airline pilot is not compatible with what I want out of life. For some, it's completely compatible, and that's fine. Otherwise I would be scared that we didn't have anymore airline pilots.

I don't like to look at it and think about the "allure" - I have to feel it in my heart to follow anything.

One of the hardest things in life is to realize its inherent simplicity. Do what makes you happy. (Ever read the Alchemist? You should. :) )
