I crashed an airbus 3 times today!

What a great day! Seriously, very exciting. I was lucky enough to get 2 hours in the left seat of an Airbus A318/19 sim today here in Denver.

Started off with a nice soft field takeoff and then the autopilot did it all after that. What a kick in the pants! It even brought it all the way down back to the runway pretty much all by itself. All I had to do was throw in the ReverstThrust and hit the brakes a bit.

One thing I did notice when I hand flew it into Denver was its the same as my 172 but different. Usually when I clear the numbers I cut the power and just glide on in. Well in a Bus it's a bit different. I did the same thing and as soon as I cut the power this thing dropped like a brick straight to the ground. Ahhh Crash and burn! Gotta keep that power in till you are on the ground and then throw in the RT.

Flew into SNA and ended up cruising right off the end of the runway like SouthWest but I didn't quite make it all the way to the gas station.

Another thing I noticed is that you can't stall the thing. I tried to do a takeoff/power on stall as I departed LAX and it just turned into a rocket. Can't stall it, can't spin it.

I guess the thing that I really learned today is how different airliners are. You can not just throw in the power and expect it to be there. Spool time is alot more than the GA aircraft we normally fly. And oh yeah, microbursts will kill ya!

Had a blast! Can't wait to do it for real some day!!

That sounds awesome, how did you score that?

Where is the frontier training place? Is it out at the airport or somewhere else?

It sounds like you're getting some great connections with your job... I'm jealous

I actually got contacted through my pictures over at airliners.net. They wanted to use some of my shots for the training manual and traded me some flight sim time for the photos.

F9 flight training is over by Pena and I-70, had to hunt it down this morning. Glad I found it, it was a great experience and I met some really nice people!

Wow, thats cool. I've seen some of your pictures over there, they're really good. Did they offer you the sim time instead of money or did you suggest that? (I imagine you did

He just offered it up and I jumped on it. I only started taking pictures to learn more about airplanes anyway, I would say it helped!

I have a deal with Frontier to take pictures for them already. They use a bunch on the employee website and let me sell them at the company store. It makes a couple bucks on the side for me and its fun plus I get to meet alot of people through it.

Logging the time? No, I didn't even think about that till I was on my way back home. I'm not sure if I could?

Can I put it in my log book myself? I had about an hour and a half in the left seat with an instructor in the back setting situations up for me? I could call it A319 familiarisation?

Is that legal even though I have not finished my private?

Im probably way off, but i think you could log it as long as the person with you was an instructor authorized to give instruction in that aircraft/sim. you might wanna look into that. it might be nothing more than something fun to have in there.

Something looks bogus in my logbook!

I suppose I could do it, afterall, logbooks are based on the honor system anyway right?

I agree with the above post. You should be able to log it as long as you had an instructor with you, and I'm guessing you did. Even if the guy just has an ATP and a type rating, he could sign you off.

As for logging the time, well, that is tricky, if Frontier did not check your US Passport or US Birth certificate with the raised seal along with a photo ID, then they will not be able to sign your logbook as it was not training, but a "joy ride only".

pretty slick, tim. how did you do with the sidestick controller? is it pretty natural or was it hard to get used to?

To get training in an aircraft with a maximum gross weight of over 12,500 lbs. you must be a US citizen or pass a federal background check. That came about after 9/11.

I was always wondering about that too and the first turn I did after I took off was kinda odd but then after that I forgot about the sidestick and it just seemed natural. I always thought it was kinda weird before but I like it.

The thing that was kind of annoying after a while was I didn't know what to do with my right hand. In the Cessna I either put both hands up on the yoke or I put my right hand on the power. In the 319 you can't be fiddling with the power like you do in a cessna so I ended up resting my hand on my right knee most of the time.

Yeah, I am an employee for Frontier and have all the checks done so that isn't a problem.

My question is, can I legally just write it in myself? The guy I was with was Frontier's Airbus Flight instructor. I wish I could remember his name now, doh!

It's not like it will mean anything down the road anyway but that would look pretty neat in my logbook. Afterall a logbook is just based on the honor system anyway and it is my logbook. Would a potential employer look at it down the road and think I was dishonest if I put it in there?

Thats pretty kool Mate.

Your blood must have been pumping! I got a Sim ride in one of our C130J hercules, and that was the best. Feels so real.

Its not that different to flying your warrior or cessna though!

if you were going to pad a logbook you wouldnt do it with sim time from an a-319.

I did the same thing you did in the -9 sim a month or so ago, and like you I also forgot my logbook.

I was told by the guy who ran the sim, that if I had my logbook he could have logged it as dual recieved for me. Since he had all of his instructor ratings current and was checked out as a sim instructor for that aircraft.

I looked into just putting in myself, but after asking around a bit I decided to just let it go. Didn't want to do anything stupid that could raise flags in the future. You can bet ur a** I'll be bringing my logbook next time I get the chance to do it again though!
