9-5 Ruins Lives
...a few of our esteemed members calling out others about having no experience on certain subject matter and not being able to voice their respective opinions and ideas. Last I checked this was 1) a free [speech] forum 2) a place to learn 3) a place to guide new folks 4) a good place go be.

What gives? I understand the arguments about ‘walk a mile in my shoes’ but if we don’t allow other views - ill-informed or not – to take part they learn nothing. I had a new member PM about a certain shady fast track program and initially thought he was defending them. Turned out he was new and asking an honest question - I apologized for my perhaps snippy response (sorry again man!). It is easy for those of us in the business that live it, breathe it, talk it, sleep it each day to get annoyed by little things like this. But JC exists in large part to shape the new-comers to be the solid aviators of tomorrow.

So I ask that everyone (including myself) not to get short with seemingly crazy/weird/silly questions and remember how each one of us got to where we are today. Don’t try to censor someone on a subject because they just might learn something along the way.

I agree! I have no expeience in the 121 world yet so I hope I havent upset anyone with my post! I just have been trying to keep an even level and remind those they were a student once!
 
Personally, I think it's mostly a matter of whether or not there is a topic about the exact same thing like 5 lines down. I think it can get tiring for those who have been around a while to be able to see a new thread title, and pretty much know, verbatim, what will be inside. I think that anyone going to any web-forum should run a "Search" for any topics they don't see right away to see if they have been covered. Then, see if the information is current. Then, if it is either not covered or not current, post a new question.

I don't think anyone here tries to come across as condecending, but I know for a fact that Doug and the mods here have gone completely out of their way on more than one occasion to make sure that recurring topics are visible and accessable to new users.

I don't disagree with what you are saying at all, I just am not convinced that it actually happens a lot. I'm not trying to debate you, I'm just giving my point of view. It's not the view points themselves, its the lack of initiative to search the forum (which I would consider a general Internet etiquitte) leading to another "Is (insert name here) a good school because I hear they guarantee you an interview" thread.

On a last note, I've been here long enough to speak up and say that no matter what is said, I absolutely guarantee that all the people here are 110% dedicated to helping and truly want to help.

Seriously,...I understand your feelings about this. I also had the same response when I started surfing these aviation message boards, and was appalled at some of the childish rsponses...but, after all, it is an anonymous message board, and anyone can say anything he/she wants.

Take everything with a grain of salt (or a block) and have fun with it.

There are always gonna be smarta$$es calling you. If you respond to their asinine comments, it just feeds the frenzy.;)
 
It's aviation bike. People forget real quick where they came from and are not willing to help others along for fear of someone else not having to work as hard as they did or suffer as much (I use suffer lightly).

Just remember how this makes you feel, and if a 5 or 10 years, take that into consideration when someone is asking a question or trying to understand something.

I think most of the guys getting called out on specific subjects, from what I have seen is when the guy with zero experience with the subject at hand attempts to come off as "knowledgeable" on the subject...

Now, if some guy is just trying to learn a thing or two and gets "shhhhhh'd" because he's not a Triple 7 Captain, that's silly..

Seems like there are lots of "250-hour-wonder-bread-pilots" running around on these boards...

Guys with zero experience trying to walk in bigger shoes.. Now that.. is annoying..
 
Something about the area of 200-300 hours in a guy.. Those seem to be the guys that annoy me the most..

Seems like every time I bump heads with a guy here or elsewhere.. He's sitting between 200-300 hours...
 
I don't care how many hours anyone has. There is always someone with more hours, experience.......

These words work for everyone, and not just to wonderboys so many people speak of.

However, I am particularly annoyed by the low-time know it alls.. Perhaps I should have said that?

Most of us have been there. I know I was. When I had about 200-300 hours, I thought I knew it all too. It wasn't until I got my first job and had spent about two or three months in the right seat before I "woke up." At least in my case, it was just fighting for acceptance. You see these guys, look up to them, and you want to be a part of the "group." I think that is the case here. We all want to be accepted by those we hope to emulate. It could be said for regional pilots who fight for acceptance from their major airline brethren, or ROTC guys who want acceptance from active duty pilots.

It is just a phase. It shall pass.

Though the medium used might be the internet, this is hardly an anonymous message board.

Both I the webmaster and many others have their faces littered around the site. And we meet as a jetcareers crew every October in Vegas, Chicago and Long Beach CA. for some real time face to face interaction.

Anonymous message board...hardly. As a member, you're welcome to attend!

I know when I was in the 200 hour area, I thought I had it all figured out. Got into arguements left and right with Don and NJA_Capt over low timers. When I started studying for my CFI, I had an epiphany: these guys were right, and I was wrong. Someone with that low time doesn't belong in the right seat of a jet. Now, a 500-700 hour guy....maybe. It depends on the quality of the time they've got.

The one thing that gets me is the people that ask about something, get a response from people in the know and that have been there, and then basically say we don't know what we're talking about b/c it doesn't mesh with what they want to hear.
