Passed by the House, being bounced around by committee in the Senate, H.R. 915: FAA Reauthorization Act of 2009 establishes new fees for airmen certification. Anyone hear anything more on this?

SEC. 122. REGISTRATION FEES.

(a) In General- Chapter 453 is amended by adding at the end the following:
‘Sec. 45305. Registration, certification, and related fees
‘(a) General Authority and Fees- Subject to subsection (b), the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration shall establish the following fees for services and activities of the Administration:
‘(1) $130 for registering an aircraft.
‘(2) $45 for replacing an aircraft registration.
‘(3) $130 for issuing an original dealer’s aircraft certificate.
‘(4) $105 for issuing an aircraft certificate (other than an original dealer’s aircraft certificate).
‘(5) $80 for issuing a special registration number.
‘(6) $50 for issuing a renewal of a special registration number.
‘(7) $130 for recording a security interest in an aircraft or aircraft part.
‘(8) $50 for issuing an airman certificate.
‘(9) $25 for issuing a replacement airman certificate.
‘(10) $42 for issuing an airman medical certificate.
‘(11) $100 for providing a legal opinion pertaining to aircraft registration or recordation.
 
Wait. Is that $42 for an INITIAL medical, or is that gonna be for every renewal? Nothing like more cash outta my wallet every year.....
 
What's another $150 for FAA fees on new certificates in a $50,000 training program :clap:
 
That is BS, IMO...Great now your 1st class is going to 100 plus fees....Next they'll start charging for ATC services...

In reading more on the Bill it indicates the following as supporters...

  • Airports Council International
  • Air Transport Association of America (ATA)
  • Regional Airline Association
  • National Business Aviation Association
  • FedEx
  • Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association
  • Rockwell Collins
  • General Aviation Manufacturers Association
  • National Air Traffic Controllers Association
  • Air Line Pilots Association
  • Transport Workers Union of America
  • International Brotherhood of Teamsters
  • United Postal Service
WTH, I find it odd that AOPA and the unions are for it....
 
But being realistic, do you really think that they can keep certain fees the same for another 100 years?

This is not including new fees, just the older ones.

They are establishing new fees in this and really jacking up some old ones....

The medical fee is new...

The licensing fee is new....

The replacement fee jumps from $2 to $25....there is no way that little piece of plastic costs $25
 
Next they will make you renew your certificate every two years (just like a CFI) to milk more money out of people. Just wait...

Hmmm, as if I really need it. I already PDF'd it for anyone who needs to see it. I simply print it and present it to them. If I lose it, it'll be a cold day in hell before I pay the $25 for the plastic. Heck, I'll stick it in my safety deposit box with other valuable documents. Who needs to see the real thing?

I'll need some help here. The doctor is going to charge an additional $42 on top of their fee for a medical? Is that how I read it?
 
AOPA mentioned the medical fee in a statement to the Senate earlier this year..

""However, many members objected to establishing a new $42 fee for issuing an airman’s medical certificate. Unique to aviation, the FAA requires each Aviation Medical Examiner to not only evaluate an airman’s medical condition, but also to process and transmit the completed medical application and approval package to the FAA, and the medical examiner currently recovers the costs associated with this service. Therefore, AOPA questions the extent to which the FAA incurs any additional expenses to simply file airman medicals, and therefore we do not believe an FAA medical issuance fee is warranted.""

In Canada we are charged $55 on top of the fee charged by the doctor. Transport Canada sends us a bill themselves, after the medical is issued.

I don't think a scanned copy of your certificate is good enough.
 
Wow, awesome. Why couldn't they have thrown in standardized rates for checkrides administered by DPE's while they're at it? That's something that lots of people would like to see.

Exactly, how about everytime we call an examiner to schedule a check-ride, the examiner charges us per minute like a lawyer does on the telephone?

Its a huge bill...addresses the entire operating plan and budget for the FAA..so obviously there are sections that are good for all of us, some of us and none of us. The increase in fees for you and me are small time when it covers tens off billions of dollars.

I would be willing to bet that the cost to process and replace a lost certificate is closer to 25$ than 2$

I am 100% against user fees, however, I think it's time to get a little more realistic about some of the costs that are already established.
