MMCO's are often LDO's (or MMCPO's). Other MCO's can come from the SUPPO (ASUPPO) ranks, if things haven't changed that much.

I'm only familiar with rotary wing squadrons. When I was in the student pool in P'cola after aircrew school, a couple of the O's I stood watch with went on ASUPPO school to be MCOs. The squadrons I was attached to were Detachment concept and we had DETMOs who were all LDO/CWO's. Squadron MO was a collateral duty for O-4 pilot.

I'd be the last to defend his actions, but gosh, who hasn't done something really stupid in their life and gotten lucky that it just didn't bite them. Hopefully he has a chain of command that explores below the surface and takes a serious look into what can be done to salvage someone who obviously has a lot to offer.

He might have something to offer, just nothing to Naval aviation and certainly not as a line officer. I really don't see a place for this guy. He's not guilty of being a poor SNA or SNFO, he's (probably) guilty of a felony of a violent nature. I'll pass.

Hell, I think a pretty good test of character is how you act when you are fall-down drunk. Additionally, following a questionable act, how do you respond to authority or law enforcement? Getting into a bar fight is one thing, this is something entirely different.
 
I'd be surprised if there wasn't also something else going on that isn't a part of this news report; drugs, alcohol addiction...something that inspired this event other than just being a hothead.

My guess is that even the charges as-is (even without a conviction) will result in an Article 15 for something like Conduct Unbecoming, which will be very difficult for our young O-1 to recover from career-wise.

I'd certainly agree that true personalities bubble to the surface when drinking. Some get mean, some become jovial, and some just take a nap.

Your view that he has nothing to offer Naval aviation may be correct, but I certainly hope someone who has to make that decision for real looks into it a lot deeper than what we can see by reading a newspaper article. A human is a terrible thing to waste.
 
Recently, had a bottle thrown at me in a bar, hit my square in the chest. I had no idea what had happened as I was looking down, talking to another friend. It knocked the wind out of me and I actually thought I got hit by a water balloon. Nope, it was a new buddy and fellow Navy pilot who apparently becomes violent when he drinks to much. It took every ounce of patience I had not to rip him apart in that restaurant. He later told me he had issues with alcohol and violence. WTF. He should know better and one day, being he is a tiny guy, 5'7" and 135lbs, he needs to watch his behavior before he messes with someone who doesn't care.

If you told me this circus-act took place at a bar during bike week, I'd be trying to put together a chain of events that look a little less offensive. Bar fight breaks out among a bunch of drunks. Crappy bouncers and private security make things worse. Cops mishandle the situation.

No, this was at Disney.

I was there Saturday. Everybody who goes to the "Food and Wine Festival" goes there to get drunk (and eat good food). I was drunk. Thousands of other people were drunk. However, none of us kicked anyone's ass, except apparently this guy.
