How to Jumpseat!

I work as a ramp agent for CAL at EWR. I have a Private certificate with an instrument rating. Is their any chance I could get a ride in the jumpseat? It would be very educational for me as I plan to pursue commercial training soon. Maybe if I visit the chief pilot and ask him directly?? What do you guys think?? I promise to behave..

No. Before 9-11 maybe. Now, no way in hell. It sucks, but it's just the way stuff is now.

EDIT: The only way it MIGHT be possible is if they had an empty reposition flight or some sort of MX check and the Chief Pilot signed off on it, but even then, it's probably not very likely.

That sucks. Someone told me in Europe they let staff into the cockpit all the time. I'll ask the chief anyhow to see if I have any luck. Maybe I could go on one of the new aircraft delivery flights they run coming back from Seattle...I've heard of employees being allowed brief visits and sometimes even the jumpseat on those flights.

There was an article in Flying Magazine a year ago where with the right forms- you CAN get admission to flight deck as an observer. You need to go through your airlines director of operations as he, the FAA and the captain are the only ones who can really grant admittion to the flight deck.

But I doubt the Director of Ops is going to let you jumpseat just because- "it would be cool".

The world we live in now...

I got that at my previous employer. Helped that I sorta new the chief pilot in base, and he knew what my goals were. So, low and behold a repo flight opens up one night. CA's cool with it, chief was cool with it, so off I went to BWI. Had a heck of a time getting back the next morning non-reving, though.

In my nearly 3 years there, that was the ONLY time anything like that happened, though.

Even as a qualified pilot and crew member I don't touch the seat belt sign unless I ask the captain first.

That is crazy!

I never touch the seatbelt sign unless I check with myself first. Mostly I allow it, but occasionally I'm a dick.
