How to get a job referral from JC.

This is great advice like others have said. This is particularly helpful for the younger guys like myself who can't really get their foot in the door yet. I'll be getting in on the CFI deal here soon myself so this is great information.

This is a great thread for some younger guys. I have never even thought about asking guys on here for a recommendation. I have only ever thought to ask people that I really know. Maybe I need to rethink that.

I agree, I usually just lurk and read all of the posts on here for my own entertainment. You guys are pretty hilarious most of the time..and free (i'm a cheap bastard)!

It really is a cool thing, though, that JC seems to be such a tightly knit community and people actually do "pay it forward." Thanks to all of you guys for being so dope nasty awesome!!

Todd, I actually have to give you credit. While I've never much disagreed with your message in the past, in my opinion the way in which it was presented was often very off turning. I've noticed a big change in that recently. I've also noticed a lot less threads of people arguing with you for the sake of arguing. I think they're related!

Just thought that was worth being recognized.

I think I must be getting softer in my "old age." :D ;)

Good posts, USMC and ATN.

Too bad I'm 70 hours short...

...oh and currently not looking for another job.

I am with you on here. I never thought of asking for a recommendation or getting a job through someone whom you've met online but I guess times they are a-changing.
Good info on JC for sure.

Lucky! (on the 'not looking for another job' that is)

Great Post!

Exaclty, I just got burned 2x times this year. I talked to a few guys and get xyz people interviews and one turns down the job after getting a class date and the other turns down the interview when called after begging me to get him/her one...WTF

All of my prior recommendations have done well and made me proud until now.

Can you pay it forward too much? I am going to have a hard time getting mgmt to take any of my future recs seriously now.

Wow, that is really bad. I've never received a recommendation from this site (yet), but I did have one of my friends push my resume up the chain at my current job. I would feel really bad if I did some of those things you mentioned. Not only is it unprofessional, but it hurts you as well. All you were trying to do is be the good guy and you got burned for it.

I look forward to helping out when I can.

On a side note, what about us 4th string pilots? Should we start wearing wrestling masks or dressing like Jason Statham in Death Race? I think the passengers would like it if security brought you out to the plane shackled and dressed like that. Down here in the Carribean, it would probably give you some sort of credibility with the "clientele".

(If you'll excuse the crass analogy)
I think he meant intrinsically....a "4" who's daddy owns a King Air might be a "6"
but a "4" who's daddy owns a Citation 10 might be an "8"
and a "4" who's daddy owns a G5 would magically become a "10"

You suck at math.

A "4" whose Daddy owns a Luscombe becomes a "5"

A "4" whose Daddy owns a Great Lakes becomes a "7"

A "4" whose Daddy owns a Waco becomes a "12"

A "4" whose Daddy owns a 150, a Cherokee, or anything similar becomes a "2"

Word. I kinda thought it would be selfish to ask someone to vouch for you if you have never met, so I never thought to do that either. But unless someone is really putting up a front on JC I suppose their character comes through pretty well. I'll definately keep this advice in mind and if the opportunity arrives I'll do it properly.

I've gotten burned that way a few times also. If you don't want the job, don't ask for help.

I'm going to keep this advice in mind to. I've only ever met one other person from JC in person and that was PeanucleCRJ. I've talked to Seggy on the phone as well.

I was amazed at how willing Peanuclecrj was to help me out and give advice. Taught me a lot so far.

Hey, I resemble that remark:beer:

Good posts guys, even for us second career guys, this can be a very helpful place. I've had some tremendous help with my resume and CV recently, I'm relatively new to the private sector and am a little clueless on this.

I've always been amazed reading some posts and think to myself "wow, guess he's not much of a networker" I've always been a big proponent of the ladder theory, Never step on people on your way up, because you never know who you'll work for on the way up or on the way down.

I like JEP's sig which says, (I paraphrase) "Careful who's toes you're stepping on today, they may be attached to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow"

here is some advice . . . dont post your own thread and then repeately put your foot in your mouth!!! I've had to learn that one . .OK, still learning that one!! DUMB, DUMB, DUMB!!!!

i guess I'm at my current job for a long time now . .at least I like it!
(mikeD nows what I'm talking about)

I joined this forum to learn about the industry and hopefully know the issue effecting pilots. I have stayed because I realized that this place is more than a forum but rather like a family. Keep up the flow of info because it helps young guys like us from making stupid mistakes with costly consequences.

Gracias mi Amigos.

A bit dysfunctional..... but a family none the less:D:beer:

:yup:

My two cents as someone who has hired some folks off this board and tried my best to help out some others when I didn't have a position available, and kindly had to decline others who wanted a job because they came across JC as a jerk. Aviation is a fluid environment, your gig may be the hottest thing out there today, and tomorrow you may find yourself out of a job. I always try to treat my fellow JC'rs with respect and always reply to every PM I get about a career in my particular line of work.

I will also agree that proper Engrish helps, and never, ever leave a message on the cell phone of a potential boss that says "Hey DUDE call me back, I need work". True story.
