Impressive. Thanks Chris!

What does "Tan of bank angle" mean?

Cessna_Flyer,

You'll need to know that formula for instrument groundschool. But again that's for rate of turn not rate of roll.

What the hell would you need that in Instrument Groundschool for??

What a coincidence... I just finished watching MacGyver! It was the episode where he "went back in time" to help out King Arthur and Merlin the Magician. What an amazing show!

As far as "tan." It refers to "tangent" which is a term from trigonometry (i.e. sine, cosine, and tangent). There are buttons on your calculator that can calculate it for you. You just dial in the number of degrees, and press the tan/cos/sin button.

I got those formulas from various books I have... The Advanced Pilot's Manual and Flight Theory for Pilots. Will you ever need to apply it? I highly doubt it! But it is nice to know!

For the test. Yes I know, we sometimes go overboard at Sierra, don't get me started.

Actually come to think of it, I don't think it is on the test, but it is taught in groundschool and one of the examiners we go to likes to ask that on the oral. Don't think he's ever busted anyone for not knowing though, I sure hope not.
