How long does it take you...

slushie

Still here.
...to tell people that you fly?

I was in my geography class..which discusses way more than gulfs, bays, and isthmuses (isthmi?) Like was expecting...and the EngRish speaking instructor was striking out left and right.

-"The Thermosphere is the rayer crosest to the Earss, where arr the weather is at."

-"The standard temperature rapse rate is 6.5 degrees celcius per 1000'."

Finally he said something and I could not take it anymore:

"It is now irregal for anyone to use leaded gasoline."

I raised my hand quickly and spouted out:

"I burn leaded gas in MY PLANE!"

If somebody asks me what I do, I'll mention it, but I'm rarely the one to bring it up.

Nothing wrong with bringing it up, if that's your thing. I just get tired of talking about aviation with people who don't really know much about it. Of course I'm always friendly and happy to talk flying if somebody's interested, but I wait for them to ask the questions.

Yeah some of the silly questions get old.

But this was ..I just wanted to say "You're wrong! And I have credentials to back it up."

I was flying at 7,5 AGL in October. The sfc temp at was 20C and it was NOT -29C in my not-so-airtight plane...I would have been on the ground.

My epaulets, ray bans and leather jacket do the talking for me. Can't leave any doubt to my fellow wal mart shoppers as to who I am.

Really, though, I avoid talking about it. If someone asks me, I tell them I work for an airline.

I absolutely LOVE talking about flying, and I find that many, many people are interested.

Every now and then, one of my pilot buddies will tell me that they don't like to talk about it, and that they like to "leave work at work". I simply tell them that I'm sorry that life has dealt them a bad hand, and left them bitter.

If I were a rock star, I'd talk about music. If I were a surfer, I'd talk about surfing. I fly airplanes for a living, and I absolutely love it. I'm gonna talk about it!

thats what I do, it always strikes real good convos... I'm the type of person that loves questions and loves answering them in detail.. I know most of the people I talk to about it don't know much so I try not to get too technical... I don't show off or anything, but I love informing people about flying. Most of them see it as a dream to fly... so I tell them that it's not the hardest thing, and they should def look into it, or come fly with me one day when I go up there...

I don't really like it when people just hide the fact that they are a pilot.... they are just trying to avoid the questions they will be bombarded with.... its like they keep it a secret as if they were superman....

I talk about things I love, and thats skiing, scuba diving, sailing and flying.... flying is my biggest thing, so I talk alot about it :)

I'm more on this side of it too. I don't know why a lot of people nearly lie about flying planes.

It's less boring than most people's responses to questions like what do you do for a living or what hobbies are you into.

As for the post...how long? I don't bring up airplanes if we're talking about something completely unrelated but if it comes up then so be it.

We probably all know people who bring up flying in every conversation and that does get a little weird.

yeah i'm not that bad lol... if they ask like 'what do you do for work?' i might respond with that i'm a pilot right now and training to get all my certifications to fly for an airline one day... then the convo strikes... I really dont feel like telling that i'm a delivery boy lol

It depends on the situation. The EB Games guy that was trying to get me and my CA to buy the new MSFS that just came out? Yeah, we didn't tell him. If someone asks what I do for a living, I'm more than happy to talk about it. Most of the time, it clears up some misconceptions people have, like that I'm rich. :)

Not to mention all the boring USMC sea stories as well!:rotfl: :sarcasm:

Exactly. I try not to bring it up too much. It's weird for me because I work in a jail full time (Yeah it sucks) and fly part time. So some times I get co workers who are totally interested and ask really good intelligent questions. Then you get the ones who start a conversation about engine out stuff, and you try to explain glide ratio's etc. And they come up with "my neighbor flew F-16's for the "Navy" and he said when an engine quits you'll fall right back to earth" Then I don't bother even trying to argue and just change the subject.

I really enjoy clearing up misconceptions and representing the profession. If I'm "out," however, I usually say I just got out of the joint.

I play in a cover band on weekends and most of the places we play are near LAX so we do get a few pilots that come in for some drinks now and then. Most of the guys are always cool when I ask them about flying but there are a few that I can tell don't want to be bothered. I don't take it personally. Maybe they're just having a bad day.

Being a bitter, angry pilot seems to be the "In" thing right now! If you love it, you obviously just haven't been around long enough to be angry yet!!

So odd . . .

I'm on Lloyd's side of the equation also. My wife sometimes tells me, "Wow! You managed to go the whole evening without bringing up[ flying," it's so rare for me to not mention it within the first 8 minutes, 21 seconds after meeting someone :)

Reaction tends to be positive, although you can always expect to be asked about what you think about some of the more notable crashes, especially the GA ones.

Centennial airport happens to have an excellent restaurant. The layout and food quality are good enough for buusiness lunches, and the view of one of the FBO ramps, runways and Front Range of the Rockies is great. I take clients there. This past week I called a client to invite him for lunch. When I asked what was available near his place of business, the reply was, Can we go to the airport again?"

I love to talk about aviation. However, most of my friends and family don't. So, in the interest of being a good conversationalist, I'll slant my conversation towards the interest of the other person. Interestingly, after talking shop with my friends and families interests and careers...they almost never ask a leading question concerning mine. The only question I get from them is..."I saw a ticket on Airtran to Florida last week for $175. Do you think that's a good buy?" Ugh.
