How High?

Well there was this one time I went to this one party and.....oops misread the title

, 10,000 in a 152. The instructor asked me if I wanted to spin the plane down to 4,000, I said no thank you, but later in the flight he let me bust through a cloud!

Seriously though, I don't have much to brag about. 6,500 in a 172.
 
7500 in a PA28, we had some crazy thermals that day, hit over 2000fpm in the climb, we were just going to the practice area, but hey, why not ride up with it? It was quite cool up there, there was a sct almost bkn layer and we were weaving in and out of it.

Sweet! The airport I fly out of is about a 4 miles off the coast of Lake Michigan (just west of GRR), so I can't wait to get up high sometime and see if it actually takes shape. On some clear days you can even see the Chicago skyline from the pattern over here, so it must be great up at 10,000+ on a really clear one.
 
What happens if you try to get above the service ceilling? You stall?
 
The service ceiling is the highest altitude at which you can still maintain a 50 ft/min climb. After you hit the service ceiling you will hit the absolute ceiling, which is the absolute highest altitude the aircraft can maintain.

I've been up to 8500' in a C-152
 
I have been up to 20,350ft in my paraglider, that was something. Those were the days. Now I am off to powered flight. I have flown the C-172 well over its service ceiling. And in the C-T182 i spent 2.5hrs last week at FL190. (O2 masks suck). HA
 
I would love to go higher for better views, although one can have a hard enough time as it is seeing landmarks with all of the haze here in the Mid-Atlantic.

25,000 in a Cheyenne. That being said, I think the time I took an Extra 300L up to 11,000 and spun (inverted) it down to 4 was more memorable. I'll have to look at the tape, but I think we did ten rotations or so.

Imagine Mike Melville chiming in on this post - "328,000 feet."

They sure do. The one I've used was connected to the O2 supply almost directly above you. Two people with long mask hoses makes for fun times in a small cockpit.

12,500 in a Cessna 152....boy that took a while on a hot summer day. The things I did to avoid that summer heat. I wanted to start flapping my arms to try to make the thing climb a little better. I swear the 152 should be nicknamed the Angry Lawnmower.

FL260 in a King Air 200....techincally considered a light airplane.
