How does UND work?

I'm sure there are several Aviation employeers that read these forums and a search in google about UND will lead you to this forum.

When the job market for pilots does get better you guys complaining about UND are shooting yourself in the foot by degrading the reputaion of your degree. Now, I don't know any reasonable person that would want to do this...unless they were disgruntled after they graduated that the pilot job market is just not what it was just a few short years ago.

if you think a little chatter on the interwebs is 'degrading the reputation of the degree', you are truly delusional. im seeking to provide accurate information about the program to people considering attending, so they can learn and decide based on actual experiences. you see both extremes of experiences here. some people loved it, some people hated it.

in the end, its just a average state school, with a large flight department, fancy equipment, and thats about it.

Thought you didn't have a job.

was unemployed through november. back to flying aerial mapping now since nothing else came up in the interim.

Nothing wrong with UND. If you want to spend $100k when I spent $50k then go ahead, we'll end up in the same class with the same pay at the regionals.

It's the UND attitude that people hate. About half the UND guys I know think they are hot **** and god's gift to aviation because of where they went.

Was that $50,000 for flying only or did that cover your college tuition as well? If so where did you do your training/flying?

$30k 4 years of school ... not sure how much on flying. It's probably closer to $55k for both. Could have been A LOT cheaper but I chose to fly the nicer 172's and didn't use a safety pilot very much.

I know, it was just an example.

Nobody cares where you went to school, except the ones that think their school is some "Harvard of the skies" North or South.

What school did you go to for $55K for all your ratings and a 4 year degree?

When I was there you could go all the way to your Multi in Hawaii, SC, PHX or wherever. After that you had to do CFI/CFII in GFK. Granted that may have changed but thats how it was back in 2006-2007 before I graduated.

Love it or hate it UND is still one of the top aviation schools in the country period.

Ahhhhh.......What's the percentage of college students (in any field) who know what they're are going to do once they graduate? I don't know for sure but I bet its not too many. This argument doesn't hold water.

Oh and to the know-it-all UND bashers that complain about how much it costs to go to UND, how about kids that go to schools like BU and BC only to graduate with a degree in teaching? They pay upwards of $120,000 dollars only to get paid $30,000/yr teaching 1st grade-pretty close to what FO's get paid. Do you think that they cry and moan about how much their education costs? They could have gone to an in-state school and done it for cheaper, but didn't. Instead of crying about how much you hate GF and UND try and find something to do instead of COMPLAIN online. Nobody likes whiners (Reference aviators from TX).

Best Quote of the year.:rawk:

They're equally stupid (as I was, spending all that money at UND) for going to such schools. Those kids you reference don't bitch and moan because mom and dad paid for their education like a lot of UND kids.

...and the reason you see a lot of UND kids out in the industry is because we mass-produce pilots at UND. If 95% of the world's population were blond women....we would conclude that, well, most bad drivers are blond women. Seeing UND grads having pilot jobs doesn't imply that the school is the best of the best.

I've never understood why some UND lovers can't agree with something simple. UND isn't the best of the best. That's only a marketing thing. The school doesn't make the pilot. You work your ass off to become the best of the best. Let's drop some of that schoolname-entitled ego.

UND isn't the best of the best.

I have not heard anyone here say this, but I'm new to the board (perhaps you can point to a post where someone said UND is "the best of the best?").

I also don't think there is anything wrong in taking some pride in your alma mater...that doesn't mean you're elitist/have a big ego. If you hate UND/ERAU etc. then so be it, but I don't think people here who provide the counter-viewpoint need be labeled, imo.

The facts are the vast majority of graduates from UND would reccomend the program to others, very few UND grads "washout" of groundschool, the school has fantastic facilities, and UND enjoys a good reputation in the industry. There are other good programs too who also share in these facts.
