How did YOU learn about the FAA hirings?

A story about the shortages / hiring on the local news lead me to check out the job board to see what the requirements were and there happened to be the OTS posting and since I met the requirements I applied. :)

Am I the only one here that doesn't have some deep familial connection?

I was bored.

I applied.

PEPC next week. Go figure.

Back in February I received an email that was forwarded to me by my girlfriend, which was forwarded to HER by her father, which was forwarded to HIM by one of his business partners. It read as follows:

Knowing that I'd be graduating college in May I felt this would be a great opportunity to transition into a fulfilling career. I'm now waiting on confirmation for my Chicago PEPC to do California Terminal.

What's your story? How did you learn about the FAA's open casting call?

Believe it or not, I received a simular email just like that.

A controller who came into the gym I work at saw me doing my chemistry lab reports at work all the time and told me that controlling planes would be a lot more fun! So...I checked it out...

This is the email I was sent:

I received an e-mail from one of the hiring officials for ATC at the FAA. Had e-mailed him last year around Christmas to find out about future OTS positions... He e-mailed when Feb 08 came out.

I was getting towards the end of my second to last semester of college and had been talking to my dads best friend who is a controller and he had told me to keep an eye on the faa website for openings. So one day when I checked the website and noticed that the FAA was had an OTS application ending soon, so I applied.

You've got a very cool story. So does that mean you chemically tested controller urine? How did you do drug tests?

Not for that gig, although I have worked lab in the past. I just dealt with the collection, paperwork, regulations, and having the union reps breathe down my neck :)

You speak of "controller urine" as though it's different than regular urine. Aside from the green glow, rainbow color, and properties for use in nuclear fusion, it's just like everyone else's.

My mom suggested it as I was having no luck with my job hunt in any other field. I kind of scoffed at the idea thinking there's no way I'd have a chance. I went ahead and started doing some research on the subject and said to myself "I really could do this." So I applied, got a chance to take the atsat, didn't do so well as I hoped (don't have test anxiety but I have plenty of brain farts) and now I'm sitting here hope against hope that I'll get a referral...

i got an email from my step dad that was a forward from one of his friends.. its almost word for word the same as the one the opening post got. Weird. Guess it made the rounds. i decided to go for it, i mean what did i have to lose? Of course the pay is alot less than the email states.. I still have family members that all seem to think i will be making $200,000 in this job. I have to tell everyone that the pay is not that high anymore. I still am excited for the opportunity though!! And after training i will be making more than my current job so its still worth it.

My uncle forwarded me this same exact email about a year ago.

I was talking to a controller at Vaughn College one day on campus visit. I had already gotten accepted to that and 2 other CTI schools and wanted to figure out which one to go to.
Its was April 12. He told me that very soon the FAA would be opening up another public announcement and to watch for it.
I had never heard of such a thing, and was disappointed in myself for missing the first one. The whole time I was under the impression they hadn't hired from the public in 28 years, and my only way in was to go to a CTI school.

On April 14, Pubnat2 was opened up and official ended my college career before it started. (ATC was the ONLY reason I was considering going)

I had researched ATC many years ago, but I remember the FAA website listing some sort of military or college requirement.

Anyways, I told a coworker at my current job that I'd like to be an ATCer, and she said they should be hiring like mad. So what do you know, I lookup the FAA website, and PUBNAT1 is on there!
