How competitive are guard/Resere units exactly?

Fighter units are incredibly competitive, whether Guard or Reserve. I was picked up by a Guard Viper unit last summer and it took a substantial time and financial commitment. Attending meet and greets, sending out packets to every fighter Guard/AFRC unit hiring, and attending interviews where I was lucky enough to get them, not to mention the money spent working towards my PPL, all added up very quickly. From the time I started working on my packet until I was hired was probably almost 2 years. There's no simple or fast magic way to getting to where you want to be. If there was, everyone would do it. AFRC has had some boards that allowed unsponsored candidates to apply but I couldn't tell you with any certainty what the pick up rate was.

I love flying and I really want a flying career. I just can't decide between RW or few and I plan to start flight school soon. I was looking at 'earning potential' as a final decision maker.

Go fly in Alaska! I never made less than $50k/year up there after I got to 1000hrs and honestly I probably could have done that from 250 to 1000 if I would have gone to the right places. The money is good and you can work a rotation!
