Probable Cause: Complete and utter failure on the part of the pilot
Secondary Causes: Complete and utter failure on the part of the pilot; Inability of the nose gear assembly to adjust for pilot's IQ

I want to play! How about a captain who is ex-military and got a Commercial Pilot's Certificate and then an ATP...he may never have had a PPL.

The only time I've had pilot-induced oscillation was trying to wheel-land a tailwheel airplane. You bounce off the mains if your sink rate is too high. Even if your sink rate is perfect, the tail naturally wants to lower when the mains touch and fly you back into the air without the application of forward stick.

My problem was I was jumping the gun and pushing the stick forward just inches before the mains touched, which would cause a bounce that launched us 20 ft back in the air. Even with little bounces, it became really obvious after one or two tries that the amplitude of the bounce was getting bigger and there was going to be a prop strike or gear collapse if I didn't: a.) Go around or b.) Hold the airplane off and stabilize the speed and sink rate while sacrificing at least 500-1000 ft of runway (if that was even available). This was in a Citabria, with the "spring-type" landing gear (god I miss that plane :crazy

Moral of the story: I thought I was "above" porpoising on landing and wasn't, but it wasn't terribly difficult or unintuitive to also realize "I have started a bad trend, the airplane is going to break if I don't do something different." Problem solved...

This guy in the video never seemed to make that connection, and kept trying to force the plane down nose-first instead of going around or re-establishing a proper flare. Kind of interesting to see how long the PA-28 nose gear lasts under that kind of abuse!

Point is, CA has an ATP. Even higher ratings make bad landings, hence you don't have to have a PPL to screw up.

Ive porpoised a few times. Once because I was fairly new at flying and the other times because I was...well, fairly new at flying. I dont know anyone who is a master at landing an airplane. From 2000 to 40,000 hours pilots. Ive had what I though were perfect approaches when suddenly the wind kicks in literally seconds before touching the runway. A strong headwind in a light airplane can induce porpoising. :bandit:

There is a difference in skill level between those who have porpoised a little and those who porpoised enough to break off the nosewheel on a fairly nice day. Everyone can write a METAR that will exceed their own capability to land, but this landing just plane sucks.

Damn, what a horrendous attempt at landing. Can't believe he didn't go around after that second bounce.

A botched landing in the Cub can start a nice bouncing episode. The bungee's in the gear hardly give at all, I think they're way too tight, that along with the 800 series tires don't give you that mushy bounced landing feel like you experience in a 172.

After a bounce or two the only thing to do is add power and settle it back down or just go around.

It really makes you aware of touching down with anything less than a greaser.

Reminds me of the time I looked out the FBO window just in time to see one of my students wheelbarrowing past. Not the same but had the makings to be the same.
