My stream of thoughts:
Summers are hot n' humid like anywhere else in the coastal South, but very manageable. I would run the Rice loop (~3 miles) around 1 pm in the summer without too much difficulty, but I'm a 5th generation Texan so maybe it's in the blood. The flip side of that is winters are very mild. Texas has much geographic beauty in the hill country and western mountains. Houston is not in those areas, so don't expect much in that regard. Traffic is relatively more congested than other major U.S. cities due to seemingly endless construction (US 59 near downtown, anyone?). However, Galveston and the gulf coast are only 30-45 minutes away from Hobby. There are also many nice shopping/eating areas in Houston such as the Rice Village and Galleria area (called Uptown for some reason, even though it is due west of downtown). Downtown is becoming more populated and has some weekend nightlife but is mostly dead on a weeknight. Check out Star Pizza on Shepherd near Rice Univeristy if you like deep dish pizza. All in all I enjoyed the 4 years I lived there.
Flying related: There are a couple of soaring clubs in the area and I bet all those annoying bumps in the summer make for some good gliding. Also, Harvey-Rihn aviation is a well-known nearby aerobatic school.
I love Texas, as do most people who live there. I hope you will too! After living in California, I miss it dearly (especially the SPACE).
