Hourly Rates for independent flight instructors

If I'm not totally retard this is how I read it.

He gets paid 40/hr w/ his insurance paid.

Every hour of flight instruction he does he gets to take the airplane on his own for an hour and only has to pay for fuel.

If this is the case then it sounds like a good deal.
That sounds much better.

What about ground? I'd negotiate for 1.0 ground to count for at least .5 on the old hobbs meter.

Gotta stick it to "the man" wherever you can. :D

He pays for your insurance. OK
$40/hr for dual instruction. OK
You pay for your own fuel when you use the Mooney. OK
Each hour of your personal use of the Mooney = one hour of free dual instruction. If that's what you want but I wouldn't/couldn't be that generous.
And I agree w/ the ground instruction suggestions. Your time and knowledge shouldn't be free.

I used to have a student with there own plane and we had a similar senario. I charged that student $50/hr (ground or flight) but if I used the plane for personal reasons then either I paid for the fuel myself OR I reimbursed them with free instruction to pay off the cost of the fuel. I don't agree that you should provide free instruction when you are paying for the fuel already. Maybe pay an extra $10-15/hr to cover maintainance and TBO cost but even then...?

Well guys I don't plan on flying much so I'm really not losing anything, but I am gaining 40 dollars an hour and a years worth of insurance and atleast 40 hours in a Mooney MJ20. Nobody said I had to fly the airplane. So all in all I hope I make a killing off the deal. Thanks for all the advice and inputs, you all have helped me out!

Don't know... in order to rent an M20J you're probably looking at $200/hour wet. Figure high side 15 gallons/hour @ $5.00/hour or about $75/hour for gas; $40/hour for the use of the airplane... comes to about $115/hour for the airplane. You're coming out $85/hour ahead without the headaches of owning an airplane. If a person is looking for a good cross country airplane to use from time to time it's a great deal.
I do agree that ground time should be charged.

Why do you need insurance? The airplane should have a hull policy on it. You can be named on it or you can meet an open pilot warranty. With either of these, you don't need supplemental insurance. I have looked in to buying liability insurance but it's not easy to write. I can put you in touch with a guy who does it if you want.

FWIW, I charge $450/day for Mooney services.

Oh, if you haven't flown in a Mooney before, don't come over the numbers at 80. Come in at 70.
