Hotel van tipping etiquette

I always tip if they actually do something (Are there on time/waiting, carry bags), but yes, tipping is out of control. Just the other day I went to a deli and paid with a card. The cashier flips the monitor around and has me digital sign with my finger, but before doing so I'm shown a page on how much tip I want to leave. Boggled my mind for a second before hitting the 0% button. Do people really tip restaurants when all they do is take an order? I wasn't seated or served, i just ordered food. I don't get it.
 
I'll throw a buck or two to the van driver if they are reasonably professional but have no problem not tipping if it is an unsafe or otherwise bad experience.

I normally carry no cash. But now that I have to deal with hotel shuttles I am gonna start tipping. If I don't, it's because I have no cash.

I think this is an exceptional case.

We all tip waitresses but there appears to be some debate whether van drivers should be tipped.

I think that van drivers should get a small tip if they are pleasant and competent.

There's a difference between waitresses and van drivers. Van drivers are much more likely to see pilots collectively than waitresses and they have opportunities to go above and beyond the call in support of our jobs. Waitresses are usually more limited in this respect.

I'm sure that many of us can provide examples of special treatment from van drivers as a result of being recognized as pilots and crew.
 
Rode in a cab the other day in NYC with another pilot. Cab driver drove like a lunatic, swore and yelled at the radio/other cars the whole way. When we dropped the other guy off first he paid the amount due before getting out. Cab driver rolls the window down and yells "what no tip pal?!" Unbelievable.
 
Unless it's unreal bad, I always tip the van driver... so does everyone else I've seen at southernjets. If one guy runs out of dollars due to the stripper party the night before, the other guy typically spots and then you get the next round.

Most people I've heard using Uber don't tip. Even talking to drivers they say they rarely get tipped and they refuse to put a tip button on their app.
 
Best van service I've ever gotten was also the guy who refused our tips. I believe the quote was, "keep your singles, I'm not a stripper!" Made me laugh :)
