Makes sense, I don't like it but I get it. Gotta polish a turd one way or another right? The pay has gotten better, and that is good. No need for fluffed advertising and slimy car salesman tactics though, there are better ways to bring people on board in my opinion.

I Just flew with a captain who has been at QX since the metro days. Told me his first year was 14k salary in 1990. By 2001 he was topped out on dash-200 CA pay around 45k a year. So glass half full, FO's second year make what a topped out 200 CA made 15 plus years ago.
Let me help you out.

Yeah that's why I said glass half full. I didn't originally include the part of the conversation where he told me how I easy I have it financially now. I then asked him if he remembered how much he rented a place for back in 2001. He said in the late 90's he paid 650 for a 2br place. I LOL'd and told him how much I pay for a 1br now. He seemed more understanding for the remainder of our conversation.

I know that always bringing up the pay scales makes one seem like they're complaining, but that is not the case. Truth is, right now the regional model works well for a certain demographic. Single people who can have roommates, no ties to a certain location etc.. I am pretty involved with the VA process locally, and talk to active duty folks that are getting out. Just like myself, the majority are at least 25 and some in their 30's when they make the leap and start flight training. They have already started the game of life, married, children, mortgages and other obligations. It is hard to tell them the honest truth, to watch their faces drop when I tell them what to expect as far as finances are concerned with the beginning of this career. In the last year I would say of the 20 plus guys I have given advice to, only 5 have decided to still give it a shot. Of those 5, only 3 are still pursuing their ratings. That is an issue to me, as I've said before there are people that really want to make this a career and are excited to fly. They just can't put their families through the hardship of the "lean years". If we can continue to change the industry, maybe that 5 out of 20 will one day change to 15 out of 20 people. Then I see these articles that are just full of garbage in order to persuade little kids to get in the van for some candy, It's frustrating

Inflation though. Changes it to equivalent of $26k and about 62k respectively. Still not amazing but not sub McD's wages when you look at it at first glance.

Edit: Derp. Wifi hadn't loaded that someone already pointed this out.

I just hope the Portland CoL increase slows down at some point. If I end up spending 2200 for a 700sqft place, I could do without the 7-9 month rain season. :)

It's a real bummer, what's happening to the left coast, for that reason.

I loved, absolutely loved, living in the East Bay, but I don't think I'd even be able to do it the way I want to (close to work, reasonably comfortable) on RJ captain pay anywhere.

The overall change in culture not withstanding. I am a west coast guy and can't imagine being anywhere else, but every real estate spike takes more of what made it great away....i miss the west where people came to dream, build a future on their terms, not be like everyone else, and struggle to do it.

I think a lot of that is moving to the inter mountain west, since for the most part it's still affordable.

Move to Arizona, it's hot as Hades in the summer time, but VERY affordable, compared to anywhere on the west coast.

Is Airport Reserve always this cake? 430 am show. Fly some repo legs or shuttle legs. If no one calls, sleep until they call or noon arrives. Home by lunch everyday and never overnight! If I wasn't trying to build time/experience this would be the best gig in the long term!

Yes...AR is pretty low key, esp now that it's only 8hrs. When I was a FNG, it was 10hrs of pain...esp in the summer when it's nice out and you're stuck sitting at the airport/not flying.

I prefer to fly/get over MG + per diem...but with a wife at home, I don't blame you for wanting to be home every night!

I got stuck on long-call reserve last month. Wasn't what I wanted, but not as awful as I had feared.

- Got used about 70% of my reserve days.
- Usually knew what I was supposed to do at least 24 hours in advance. I generally just self-notified, avoiding any 3 a.m. calls from Crew Scheduling.
- Lots of deadheads and airport sits. Nearly all my trips were out-of-base. I did only one Portland trip the entire bid.
- Once you get to work, you're basically treated like any other reserve. They don't like releasing long-call reserves, so you'll work to the end of your last reserve day, OR get released with an assigned show the next day.
- There is no "a.m." or "p.m." in long-call, so there's no consistency as far as early trips or late trips. Come to think of it, that's pretty common with any type of reserve at Horizon. I've done plenty of "a.m." reserve that got changed to "p.m.".

With long-call, you're contactable 24 hours a day. Crew Scheduling will assign you a trip, then put you on a 12-hour rest period prior to the start of the trip. I was worried about the whole 24-hour contactability thing, but it wasn't such a big issue.

I also want to fly more and get the experience in the Q through winter. I want to go to Canada and Montana while the weather sucks, back and forth to seattle wont make me a better future captain that's for sure. But yes, overnighting in my own bed makes for a happy wife right now :)

Just make sure you come prepared for an overnight and to get extended. Then you'll not get hosed. Picked up an FO in SEA a few weeks back that was the airport PM...short notice, "You're going to EUG for the overnight" FO: I don't have an overnight bag.

And to pack said bag with everything needed for both Cali and Montanada (Montana + Canada = cold flying for those of y'all that don't speak QX) flying.

Dude, flip flops, shorts, and the trench coat work well for going out and getting food in Billings in the dead of winter...

Oh I pack my bag for the amount of days I'm sitting Airport reserve. When I was Airport in GEG they usually turned into 2 or 3 day trips anyway. I also pack for cold, if I end up somewhere warm I just wear gym shorts lol
