Horizon Air

Last year we had the chief pilot from Horizon in my Aviation Career class. He said they don’t upgrade, the aircraft you start with is the one you’ll finish with. You get one training class, helps to keep their operation cost down. Also a Dash 8 captain will make the same as a CRJ captain.

So if they assign you the Dash 8, you become captain eventually, and retire/quit as a dash 8 captain?

Any ways to get a certain aircraft or no?

Correct, the aircraft you’re assigned to will be the only aircraft you fly. I’m sure they made some exceptions, but the policy last year was no upgrading. Regarding what you get to fly, its decided by the best fit (pilot/aircraft).

If you want a good airline job, Horizon has easily got to be the best place to go. If you are looking to use them to get time/upgrade and move on then Great Lakes is your best option. If you are looking for a happy medium then there are dozens out there that can fit that bill.

Then again, all this depends on where you want to live too.

I talked to one of their training managers a few months ago and he told me they like to hire people who are familiar with the areas they fly to. He said people from the Northwest and Rocky Mountain region make great candidates as there are always plenty to choose from in those areas. He also said they like to have a good mix in their training classes in terms of the people being from other airlines, cargo, and instructors, and then also having a variety of experience.

The Horizon contract provides a "virtual" seat-lock for FO's. Pay for FO's is based on seniority (ie - the equipment they COULD hold) and not on actual equipment flown. FO's may bid to other equipment, but then are restricted to the lowest pay scale (Q200) for two years following the move. This per the current contract (I have it in PDF, so I can't cut-n-paste.)

Captains are paid by equipment - CRJ pays better than Q400, Q400 pays better than Q200.

Eeks, that sucks if you decide to move. I guess they really want you to stay on that certain aircraft.

I still say, if i could Horizon would be first choice.

Comparitively, 30k sounds better first year, than 18k.

Okay quick questions

1) When do you learn what aircraft you will get (when they ask you if you want the job, or after you have agreed to take it?) In other words, can ya hold out on accepting the job untill they tell you what a/c you want?

2)Ive heard that upgrade times have changed recently, as in 4 years is the most recent captain. Can anyone confirm?

4 years is fine for me. 7/8+ is a little hard to swallow.

Thanks in advance.
