Hoot Gibson on Reno and Shuttle

A very good interview with Hoot Gibson. Nothing unexpected as far as Reno content. I found the Shuttle content very interesting.

There's a lot more about Hoot that's not talked about. I won't say a bad word about him but he's managed to get himself "disinvited" from more than one unlimited team. I'm absolutely certain his intention was to go fast, have fun and do it safely. There is no doubt he's a great pilot, but if he's so focused on safety why would he decide to race airplanes? Doesn't matter now, it's over.

Did you know Hurricane Hannah?

I respect the fact that he discusses how he feels safer in the unlimited class given the spacing of aircraft, and how he singles out the T-6 race as unsafe. I think any good pilot out there has some operations they don't feel safe doing that maybe others don't think about because they've deeply considered it. I wouldn't fly our club Cherokees that didn't have a shoulder belt, and many of the kids in the club thought that was odd.

I actually met him at a supercross long before I ran into him again at Reno, I didn't know him. With my limited skills I've tried to find the article he wrote about the time he was flying Voodoo at full tilt and it lost an elevator trim tab, I've been unsuccessful. The part of what he wrote that always stood out to me was his description of waking up/coming to and not immediately understanding why his cheek was rubbing grip tape, turned out it was the cockpit floor and he was way above the course with the engine still at max power. Perhaps some of the big brains here can find it and post a link. I guess my point is the problem that caused the crash in 2011 was not unique but the outcome was. Air racing is dangerous, there's no doubt about it. It's not as if they're carrying passengers and the pilots know the risks and willingly sign up. Some people want to live in a bubble wrap society and others don't. Choose your own path, don't tell me I can't.
