G'day guys,

Anyone have the joys of flying into Kai Tak before it closed?
I thought the checkerboard approach was something spectacular! Was it Rwy 13 or 31 with the checkerboard approach?

any one with any expeirances, plz share!!!

I flew the approach in a 737 full motion sim a couple of times. It was Rwy 31. In a narrow body, it was cake. I suspect flying something really big would have made it much more difficult... Really cool though.

I flew to Hong Kong in 1987 on a 747, and couldn't believe the sharp turn to final. It's an eerie feeling, looking out the window and being able to see people's TV sets in their apartments at your level and above, not that far away.

I wouldn't call it a joy though, I found the airport very busy and expensive, just to rent a baggage cart.

I flew that approach many times before the airport closed. Last time in there was 1 week before they shut it down. It was fun.

Actually, the "Checkerboard approach" was more properly known as the IGS 13. I actually have the approach plate in my collection of goodies somewhere. One of my great regrets in aviation is that I never got to do that approach in the real airplane. Now they've got an airport on an island over there ... where's the fun in that???

It's an IGS approach because it's a localizer / glideslope setup that isn't even close to being aligned with the rwy. The checkerboard is there so that when you break out you see it, and know you're in the right place for your turn to the right.

IGS stands (stood) for Instrument Guidance System. It was an ILS-like approach (provided localizer and glide slope signals) that descended you on an eastbound heading toward the mountain with the checkerboard on the side. At MDA, you saw the checkerboard, and made a 47 degree right hand turn from the easterly heading to align yourself for landing on runway 13. Pretty cool actually.

Ok, so you said IGS stands (stood) for Instrument guidence system....im guessing Kai Tak was the only airport in the world with one of these?

So it that kinda like (read in the most redneck accent you can picture me with...Russ know's what I'm talking about)...

"So you pull up a ways, not a long ways but a short ways so you're just doin' alright then you make yourself a right turn now don't turn too much just a bit there son 'cause if you go too far you're gonna hit that cow up there on top of that there hill once you done that yer gonna go for a long while, not a short while till you get to Ed's barn and then you get yer Texaco map out and make yourself a sharp left because if you don't make it sharp we're gonna talk about that cow at the top of the hill again now ya understand son?"

There are still many exciting approaches around I know people talk about DCA visual down the river, there is London City at 5 degrees, short runway, etc, laluna (or whatever) where you fly around mountains and land.

There are other IGS approaches around. I can't think of which airports they're at right now but I know I saw one or two in some current charts just last week.
