Hobbs vs. Tach Time

Just wanted to hear what everyone's thoughts are on flight schools charging by hobbs time vs. tach time. I'm looking at possible changing flight schools and my current school charges on hobbs time. The school I am looking at charges by tach time. They are saying it is 20% to 30% cheaper to get charged by tach time. The broochure they sent me lists a 152 for $78 per tach hour and they say that is about equal to $62 per hobbs hour. Does that make sense?

I've never really taken notice on what the difference is between tach and hobbs time.

If your gonna do touch and goes or something that will keep the engine running at a lower RPM then tach time, if your gonna be doing a cross country, hobbs time.

20% to 30%...not sure if it's that much but I'm in a flying club that charges by tach time. When I was training for my private and was just doing alot of pattern work, you could definately tell a difference between tach and hobbs since you weren't running it at a constant 2400 RPM. Now that I'm building simulated inst. and x country time for the instrument rating I am seeing virtually no difference when the two are compared. So it just depends on your situation I guess, but i don't think you can really go wrong with tach time.
 
Its really all relative what are going to log hobbs time or tach time. if you pay for tach and log hobbs then its a good deal.

Why would you ever want to log tach time...the logbook says total duration of flight, tach time wouldn't necessarily cover that, hobbs does.
 
Heh...my first 200 hours or so were at a little flying club. They charged by the tach (didn't even have hobbs meters), so that was what I logged. It wasn't until long after I'd stopped flying there that I realized I shortchanged myself a little. I decided it wouldn't be right to correct it. So I have a few more hours than what I have logged, oh well.

yeah, same flying club situation with me.. i usually just glance at the clock at start up and shut down, then add about .8 to it for error..

i got the impression that some people might pay for tach and log tach, i know what he said.
 
on a long x-country you could come out way ahead doing tach time. Just reduce your engine power down quite a ways, say 70% that way you get lots of hobbs time yet dont have to pay too much for it.

I must be too impatient then, tend to run it on a fairly high power setting, therefore, they both pretty much equal each other. Point taken...I'll try 70% or so this week and see how they compare.
