Hit vs. Press

So I was having this conversation the other day with a captain. We were both in complete agreement about it's rediculousness.....

I was told and scolded numerous times throughout new hire training last September that I do not "hit" buttons. I was told we either "select" or "press" them. I literally got to the point where I had to take a deep breath and count to 5 one day because I was getting so angry about the CSI instructors telling me I was saying it wrong.

I know what hit means. They know what hit means. That is how people say "select" or "press" from my neck of the woods. Much like Southerners tend to say "mash." I also say pop instead of soda or coke.

I won't get too into it as it gets my blood boiling, but is this really that big of a deal? My argument is that they are changing my vocabulary and thought processes when saying or thinking about a word. When I describe how to type something on a computer, or anything that requires hitting a button, I say "hit!" It means press or select in my head. Why were they being so hard about this? Anyone else with similar experiences or a possible explanation? Thanks.

You're an airplane hitter? That's a felony. :) The boys in the big house oughta' have some fun with you.

I don't know, but I was STERNLY rebuked for saying "hit the _____ button" in ground.

We probably work at the same place, too. As far as verbatim memorization, it's "Quick disconnect button — PRESS and HOLD"...so that could be it.

Unless you're talking about reciting memory items, it sounds like a bit of a strange thing to harp on somebody for.

Sounds like they like having the ability to correct people and are being a bit overzealous with that ability. Like you said, hit, select, press...all the same meaning. However, I think you need to let it roll off your back. Just like them trying to make an unnecessary correction is pointless, you getting fired up about it also serves no good. You are then focusing on being annoyed vs learning to fly the new aircraft.

I will say this though, it is NOT pop...it is soda or nothing! Soda fizzes, there is no popping involved. :D

It was as simple as that too. I would just calmly be describing a simple/standard flow and they would stop and talk to me like I'm their teenage son and they found cigarettes in my car.

I really could not get over it. Even my captain shared the same opinions.

No, none were memory items. The word press or select are nowhere in the memory items for my plane.

It's pop damnit!

Some of these training guys have nothing better to do than correct people on random stuff like this. Even on memory items, it's a stretch. As long as you know which button (or switch) to press (or hit), and can demonstrate that effectively in the sim, there's no reason to get up in arms about minutiae.

It really felt like they were getting off on correcting me. The correction was always accompanied by a pompous "Do you know anything?" kind of attitude. I finally did learn to just brush it off, but surely this isn't SOP everywhere?

Did you also get the "They are'nt throttles... they are Thrust Levers" ..... I was also admonished one day while checking the flight controls and announced I was "Checking the stick"... guy looked at me and said "stick??? what is this stick you speak of?.....its called a Yoke!" ...... really?!?!?! Ask any pilot out there what a stick is and I'm sure you get the correct answer

Coming back, watch your sack!

I finally have realized that the training center is full of those personalities. The training center and line are not the same thing.

If you Hit or Mash buttons, they break sooner.

Impact Maintenance < equipment lifespan, > replacement.

They are tender parts of your significant other. Caress 'em.

It isn't just vocabulary, it --> poor habits.

Soda and pop, hoagies, subs, grinders, however...

Wrong.

I don't go around karate chopping the pack buttons or jabbing the auto ignition. I push them down with the same caress and care as those that "select" them. I absolutely do not understand how this is a poor habit? Do people really think we are literally hitting buttons. C'mon. It's just a word. That's it.

Liter of cola?

I've heard of props/propellers being one too.

I'm sure that BrewMaster knows how to caress buttons, and he may be in the majority.

But not everybody does.

Think of it like slamming the gear onto 22L vs greasing it in just after the numbers.
