Have three friends working their now. According to them, an expensive study was conducted and it "showed that the name reflected an elite and safe program." It was pretty recent too, October 1st was when it changed.

Is there a CFI gig that is not a direct path to SkyWest?

My guess is that between all the other regionals offering bonuses, and now with Endeavor's tentative agreement for significant pay rises in lieu of bonuses, and others still that have been offering tuition reimbursement for years, Skywest is doing pretty much all they can to entice potential pilots without actually increasing the compensation for those pilots when they eventually come. That, and the fact the the AA wholly-owned and Trans States going after Army helicopter guys.
That was the first thing I said when I asked them about the name change. Study shows "it's a good name," but I think of countless corporations that get purchased and rebranded for various reasons.

The only ones I've heard of are the new planes on the part 61 SkyWest ab initio side. I think it was called Skypath or something like that.
