Man, lemme tell ya, the simplicity of a 402 sounds pretty nice right about now!
We just finished ETOPS and long range navigation, and today had a simulated oceanic crossing (well, the start of one anyway) with all of the fun stuff that comes along with that. I thought that it'd be 9 hours of reading a Maxim while watching the jet fly itself across the ocean; I was sorely, sorely mistaken.
Between the time/fuel scores, getting the oceanic clearance, coast out FMC/nav checks, position reports, GNE checking, 10 minute plots, and probably several other things I'm forgetting, well, you're a busy little bee. I felt like I was sailing a steamship across the ocean in 1904, not flying a modern jet aircraft. Guess all this will take some getting used to.![]()
If you are CPDLC oceanic crossings are a breeze. My last trip, I had to make 2 position reports via voice because we lost datalink....2 whole position reports.
