Hired at Cape Air

This afternoon I was offered, and accepted, a Cessna 402 captain position at Cape Air. :D :rawk:

It's bittersweet to be leaving my current gig. I've had a blast and worked with some fantastic people, doing some fantastic flying. Just yesterday I delivered a Cessna 172 from Nebraska to Montreal, QC. Very few pilots get to have those sorts of adventures on a regular basis like I have.

Still, I knew it was time to do something different and I'm very confident I made the right decision to go with Cape Air.

Training will begin mid-September.

MOCHA HAGoTDI!

Congrats! You figure where you will be based?

Latest projections say San Juan, Puerto Rico or St. Louis, Missouri are the most likely bets. But Cape Air pilots are usually based in the outstations, so I could be in any number of small towns throughout the Caribbean or midwest. I won't know specifically where I'm going until the end of training.

I'm hoping for the Caribbean, but I'd be happy with either.

Sounds like fun!

If they do outstation basing, maybe you'll end up in Mayaguez, PR. I've got family a bit north of there in Aguadilla and the west side of the island doesn't have the bad reputation that some areas in and around SJU have. Overall, not a place I would complain about having to live in.

congrats, btw does Cape Air hire FOs or strictly CAs?

My understanding is that a few FOs are used throughout the system, but the vast majority of pilots are captains. Still, I'd apply if you're close to ATP mins.

MOCHA HAGOTDI! Nice work man. You'll have fun. I'm in groundschool with a former ATR and 402 Cape Air guy.. Says he loved every minute.

I used to live in Aguadilla and you will love it... I think they also have bases in San Juan, St. Croix, and St. Johns... but don't quote me on that... you will do some interesting VFR (read IFR) flying down there... have a blast and congrats.

Congrats, my friend got hired on there last fall and he was San Juan based, unfortunately he could only get a reserve line and he only flew maybe 50 hours all winter, hopefully that's not you.

Congrats and good luck. I've been to San Juan, its pretty and historic but a tough city to live in if your not Puerto Rican. OTOH if they give you the option of something like Aguadilla or Borinquen, take it in a heart beat its absolutely beautiful there! But you'll still have to learn a little Spanish! :)

I believe the term is "Caribbean VFR"

I believe the term is "Caribbean VFR"

That's exactly it.

My advice as someone who flew in the Caribbean for Cape Air: Just file IFR if it's marginal. Lots of companies down there push it, but they don't have the option of filing (most of those companies are 135 VFR only); you, fortunately, do have the option. You'll hear people say that it's "too much of a pain," but nothing could be further from the truth. San Juan CERAP is an FAA facility like any other. Tortola is slightly more of a pain, only because you have to file an ICAO flightplan. It's still easily done on DUATS, though. If you're on high mins and they can't find you an SIC, don't let that change your decision on whether or not to go IFR; proper staffing is the company's job. That "Caribbean V" crap gets out of hand.
