Hilsboro Aviation

What would you like to know? My information is two years old now, but I'm happy to answer questions. There are a few others around here who also instructed here, I'm sure they'll chime in.

I know stuff.. What do you want to know?

Pay is 16/hr starting, and goes up to 16.50 after 100 dual given, 17.00 after 250 Dual given up to 21.00 I think at some point.

Work 6 days a week, they'd like you to take at least one hard day off.

Stick around for a bit they may pay for II/MEI addons (this is new since I was there).

Stick around a couple years you could end up as PIC in a King Air.

I am going to be looking at getting a flight instructor job sometime in April or May and I have seen these guys advertise open positions alot, didn't know why they can't seem to keep instructors or is it just because they have a large operation? Is it a good place to work? Also was wondering about the king air possibility that was mentioned by juxtapilot.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's growth from all of the new gibill students that they are getting.

When you instruct international students, you'll be surprised how instructors are anxious to get their hours and get the heck out.

From what I understand from talking with co-workers that have worked there, there's a lot of international. They've also lost two Seminol's in the last 2 months if that matters. One in a midair and the other up at BFI. I guess if you go out to Troutdale, it's more domestic.

They have 2 campuses, Hillsboro and Troutdale. Both are training a TON of china students. Previously Troutdale was Part 61/141 community college students. Weather can really mess things up in the winter, well, Hillsboro wasn't too bad, just watch the freezing levels. Troutdale was challenging with the winds especially when you're training private pilot students. Thirty knot winds were very common in the winter but there are airports nearby I'd usually take the students to.

They have lots of high time CFIs leaving for airlines/corporate/freight/whatever else is out there. So they're trying to fill those positions. I don't think they'll stop flying any time soon. If you go there, you'll fly a TON. Maintenance is excellent there, though the airplanes are old and don't look that pretty, they are very safe and reliable. Only concern around Hillsboro is the high density of training aircraft mixed with lots of international students etc. It's an extremely busy area. Keep your head out of the cockpit.

The King Air is a realistic option. It'll probably be a year or two before you're able to get hired on to it though, but they have 2 of them right now and they'll probably get another 1 or 2.

It's really not a bad place to work. Let me know if you have any other questions.
