Anyone have suggestions for a good starter bike? I would like something that won't suck 6 months after learning to ride.

Go Honda. The CBRs are just too good in terms of balanced handlings caracteristics for a beginner yet they can handle ripping it up so as your skills progress the bike is still capable. Do you have any prior riding experience? If it's minimal you have to go with a 600. I can bet you won't be bored at 6 months and all a 900+ bike is going to do is get you killed if you can't ride. Good Luck!
