High Altitude Endorsement

4 out of 5 great lakes prefer Michigan.
How much should I expect to pay for a High Alt. endoresement? Would it be realistic to try and do a high performance endorsement at the same time? Thoughts are appreciated.

Do not pay for a High Alt endorsement. This endorsement should be included in any initinal training/type rating if needed.

As for high performance go rent a 182 and get it that way if you really NEED it. But again unless its a requirement for a job, dont pay for it.

Well, I may very well have the possibility to get a part time gig flying a 421 for a family member's boss. It's all very vague right now with no details pegged out, so I guess that is something that can be discussed. Thanks.

I can get a 182RG for 170/hr for the HP sign-off, so that shouldn't be more than 300 or 400 bucks.

If you are going to get a checkout in the 421 the instructor should be able to sign you off for the high performance and high altitude also. All part of the checkout.

I got it in the 738 sim for $100 because I was already there and it seemed like a cool thing to have in the log book.

Was that during your upgrade or recurrent somewhere? Sorry I'm not familiar with your current situation.

So did I, the ATOP program was a really neat experience. It was hilarious as well, seeing the level D sim dominate even some experienced CFI's that were there at the program with me several years ago.

Is Wayne still doing that program?

Edit: I'm an idiot, just saw the link you posted. haha

ATOP was an awesome experience, and Wayne was seriously one of the coolest people I've ever met. Funny thing was that we were a group of 200 hour private pilots, and one Navy Hornet driver, and the kid who showed us all up had 60-hours total.

I wonder how much Flight Sim had to do with it?

Yep. I think I had like 250 hours and a wet commercial at the time I did it. Some of the emergencies he was giving us were pretty intense. He gave me an engine fire/failure just before V1 on my first takeoff attempt. I actually did pretty well on that surprisingly.

I distinctly remember one poor dude hand-flying, clearly task-saturated to his eyeballs. The stick shaker and bank angle warnings were go off continuously. It was almost funny.

Really great program though, worth the 5 c-notes I dropped on it for sure.

The high altitude will come with your C421 insurance required checkout.

Spend the cash on spin/ aerobatic training. It's more fun, more beneficial for the immediate. You're more likely to spin a light single than fly a light single at FL 250.

Also any kind of 135(and I'm sure 121) initial or recurrent checkrides in an airplane that would require the high alt endorsement qualifies as a high alt endorsement.

Agreed - best $500 I ever spent. Here's a video I took of when Wayne gave the 60-hour kid I mentioned that same engine fire scenario. Navy guy is in the right seat and I'm in the jump seat here filming. You can get a good sense of Wayne's sense of humor here...

Haha Wayne is a good guy, met him at Sun n Fun a couple years ago. Stayed in contact since and am heading to Orlando this summer to do my high alt endorsement and get humbled in the sim.
