Hey UND guys! :-)

Hi guys! :-)

Not too long ago, I've received my acceptance letter from UND! Yay! I'll be going there this fall. :-)

Anyone from the forums currently attending UND?
EDIT: OK after a brief search, I see like three persons in here that are attending UND...

Question: I've spoken to someone from UND. I asked them regarding the flight training and when to begin. They told me that usually, most of new freshmen that have never had flight instruction begin the training during the spring semester.

From what any of you've seen, is this the general case?
I was told that, usually, it's only those with a PPL that begin training during the fall semester...

Well, just letting you guys know that I'll be attending UND this fall.

It'd be cool if I could meet with someone from JC once over there. :-)

Have a great day guys!

P.S.- Oh, and forgive me for asking this same question. I know it's been asked before, but seeing how the UND section of the forums isn't very frequented, I thought I should ask again, to get the most current info. ;-)

I am currently a senior at UND and in the multi flight course at the moment. Others from UND are Mtts422, Omdahl, UND Flyer, and I am sure there are a few others.

What state are you coming from? Any flight experience and what made you want to go here?

Anything you would like to know off hand, just ask cause I am always online.

Many thanks for the quick reply man!

To tell you the truth, I was expecting you to be the first to reply, lol.

I had been to the forum before, and saw you were the more active one here, so I did have an idea on that. ;-)

Well, I'll be coming from NY. I have NO flight experience.

And you ask what made me go over there? Well, let's say that the lovely weather just attracted me so much! Ha ha ha, just kidding. ;-)

Actually, I found it my best option in terms of quality of training, reputation, and campus life.

Also, let's not forget the financial part!
Though I've noticed that flight training at UND is rather expensive, I believe that its tuition for out of state students is pretty good!
On top of that, if I'm real lucky, I'll be getting a tuition waiver (Cultural Diversity Tuition Waiver). So that would leave it all towards paying for room and board, plus the flight costs. So it's not too bad.

I guess there's always a sacrifice to everything. I know the WX will be real crappy, but, hey!, you gotta live with it, I suppose. It's all a matter of getting used to right?

I'd like to ask a quick question...on average, with what TT do you graduate? (an estimate) How much Multiengine time, etc.
Also, does UND give some preference to UND students (with CFI or CFII) when hiring instructors? (just wondering)

Well, that's pretty much it. Thanks in advance.
smile.gif

First of all, yes UND trained pilots are the ones that get hired to become CFIs here. I haven't met one yet that did all their training somewhere else.

As far as the time, I have no idea, my guess would be around 190 hours tt when done with CFI-I.

I am going to give you and whoever else that wants it some great advice. It is virtually impossible to graduate from UND in 4 years in Commercial Aviation without going to at least one summer of school. My advice to you is to attend this summer and do your private (102). They let anyone take 102 in the summer, even if you're an incoming freshmen straight out of H.S. graduation. By getting that done in the summer, you are able to go into 221 in the fall and already be with the sophomore class. It is imperative that you get ahead here so you don't end up here for 5 years or more. Plus, the sooner you are done with CFI, the sooner you can get hired here while attending college at the same time.

Anything else?

Great advice thanks!

So, for example, if I go this summer, and provided I don't do too bad in the training, then chances are I'll have my PPL by the beginning of fall? If so, it really sounds good. And of course, it's always better to get things done early, so why not? :-)

However, I'm thinking that I'm gonna need the extra time this summer to get ready to move over there. Though I'm not discarding the idea, because it does sound great indeed!

<<First of all, yes UND trained pilots are the ones that get hired to become CFIs here.>>
Aah, excellent! That's a relief to hear! I was wondering where I'd go searching after becoming a CFI. Thank god they hire the students!

BTW, I've chosen to go to West/McVey Hall for living. I have spoken to a couple of other UND students, and it seems like a good choice...location, etc. <---Any opinions?

Another question: Regarding loans pertaining to flight costs, what type of loans does UND offer? Are they federal loans or are they from private organizations/banks etc.?

He he, sorry to be asking so much. I know I should just call them and ask most of these things, but regardless, thanks a lot!
smile.gif

Yeah you will have your private by the start of fall if you complete the the entire 102 course (34 lessons). Then you would start the commercial/instrument course in the fall if you chose to do so. It is pretty easy to finish in the summer because there isn't too much flying going on. The fall is the busiest because everyone is flying and the winter plain out sucks (too cold to preflight).

West is the closest dorm to Odegard and not to far from other buildings you will have classes in, except math, that walk is a haul.

As for loans, you can get federal loans to cover whatever you would like, and private loans for whatever you like, but the school has to approve the need for private loans. They are pretty easy to get, but sometimes a pain.

First of all welcome, you'll have a good time at UND and you will pretty much get out of it what you decide to put into it. (i.e. Joining organazations aviation related or not.) I would second what Luke said about trying to get up here this summer and get 102 out of the way. Even though it's only one class, you'll be amazed how far it will go in the long run. I know some people that have started that class in the fall and not finished untill damn near a year later.

I'm a West Haller and aside from a few ahole RA's that I have had to put up with occasionally over the last two years, have enjoyed it here. Having said that being a junior next year I'll be more than ready to get the hell out of here and on to bigger and better things. Like Luke said it is about as close to the aviation buildings as you'll get. It usually takes me no more than five minutes to get there from here, but that walk becomes considerably quicker in the winter months. It can be a rough walk down to Witmer (Math) or Abott on the opposite side of campus, but you get used to it.

Thats my .2 cents, any other questions fire away.

Matt

Thank you so much, you two, for the great response thus far. Much appreciated!

Thanks Matt, for the welcome!

OK, this is all appearing fantastic, as I can't wait to start flying. I am so much hooked on it right now, so the faster the better!
wink.gif

OK the question, however, is, when does this summer program start? I believe it's in June 7, so that seems a bit of a problem...since my graduation is in mid-June....

Now if I could only speak with someone from my school and perhaps arrange an early "dismissal" from school...then that'd be case solved!
laugh.gif

OK guys, one question...
During the summer session, what classes would one exactly be taking? Is it just Aviation 102, or do you take non-aviation courses as well? If so, that's REAL good! It would leave all the time on earth for studying for my PPL during lovely summer.

Matt: <<Having said that being a junior next year I'll be more than ready to get the hell out of here and on to bigger and better things.>>
Are you referring to transferring out from UND, or are you referring to the dorms? Just wondering...

Hmm...well, apparently that's all I can think of at the moment.

Believe me guys, I thank you very much. It's always good to know what to expect beforehand.
laugh.gif

Matt meant getting out of the dorms.

I would talk to Idona in Student Services about what you want to do. If you can't make the only session that offers 102 but you came anyway for the 2nd session at the end of June and an aviation course, I am almost positive you would get into 102 for the fall. You don't have to take anything with 102 either, so you could just do your private this summer.

Hi AngelFuree and welcome to the forum. As far as the summer session for Avit 102, there will be 3 sessions this summer. Two sessions will start on June 7, 2004 and will go through August 8, 2004 with classes on MTWR and one session starting on June 28, 2004 also going through August 8, 2004, but classes on MTWRF. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the correction, I just went off of last year where I don't think they had a session last year that started at the beginning of session #2.

The class is from 3-5:30 pm and is M-F like UND Flyer said. I wonder if they do this because a lot of state's high schools don't graduate till June? Here in ND high schools are done in May, but I know a lot don't end till June.

Thanks! :-)

Alright, great!

Though I'm a bit confused...

See, the letter I got indicated that the June 28 session was for students who have there PPL, OR have 30+ logged hours. In which my case, is 0 logged time.

But perhaps there's something wrong with what's written. I'm gonna go ahead and call them up and ask them about it. I'd like to get this cleared up a bit. ;-)

Also, Luke says classes are from 3:00-5:30. Just "ground school" or the flying as well?

It seems that if I'd go just for the aviation classes, I'd have a BIG gap during the day, ha ha! And what to do during that time (apart from studying), lol...
wink.gif

Wow, because I suppose the school is rather empty during that time no?

God, I'm in a tough position right now...since I am seriously considering it....

Guys, how's campus life during the summer?

grin.gif

Actually, I just noticed the dates. I think I'm whining a bit too much! It's only like 5 weeks!
smile.gif

<<I wonder if they do this because a lot of state's high schools don't graduate till June?>>
I would believe so. From what I know....the majority of high schools finish in June. Though some earlier than others. For example, I know that in Pennsylvania, they finish like the first week of June. We in NY, however, finish June 26 (or something around that date). So I'd believe so... :-)

Great, thanks guys!

That session for 102 starting June 28th could just be for students with 30+ hours or their ppl. I came in with 40 hours and finished up part 61 under UND's 105 course, which is only 14 lessons. If you had your ppl, you would do the 112 course, which is the same as 105, but you don't have to have a checkride with a DE. But you should call them up and see what they say.

You could just stay through the summer and fly after the ground school ended to finish up before fall. And yes, the time I quoted is just class. You will be at the airport around 6 times for at least 18 hours.

Summer life here is a vacation for me, well what part of school isn't, but finally the weather is warm enough to go outside! Lots of thunderstorms, rain, mosquitos, and partying. I had a great time last summer and I am positive this one will be the same.

Yeah, if they tell me I can attend the June session. Then chances are, without a doubt, I'll be going.

I wouldn't want to be "idling" at UND during the fall and not flying. It's lost time. And since you've said that the instructors at UND are former students themselves, then my oh my, I better get started early.

And now that you mention the additional time at the airport. Then, without a doubt, this is the best time to train in. No distractions, more time, less non-aviation course stress, etc.

Well, let's hope UND tells me I can attend the June 28 session, though I highly doubt it. I'll be sure to post what they say. :-) (for anyone else who reads this as well)

<<Lots of thunderstorms, rain, mosquitos,>>
I can't help but laughing at that!

Luke, this upcoming academic year is your last one eh? Any plans after graduation from UND?

How are those Job Postings at the Aerospace website coming along? I've seen quite a boost in postings since I last visited the board. Wow, I just hope this will continue.

I'm so happy things seems to be improving a bit (even if just a little) all throughout the industry.

Thanks for the ongoing help,
Angel Trochez

Yea the summer is definetely the best time to fly up here.

I'm looking foward to being up here and gettin ahead on some stuff this summer. Keep us posted on what your up to.

Luke - check ur PMs

I surely will keep things updated. Thanks for the reply Matt!

BTW, Matt, are you an instructor yet if you don't mind me asking? (I wasn't sure from your previous reply whether you were gonna be a junior or senior this fall) ;-) Speaking in relative terms. Don't worry, I'm not assuming that because you're a junior or senior, that you WILL be a CFI. I'm just a curious guy.
wink.gif

Thanks,
Angel T.

Yea I wish I was a CFI right about now, be done with all this training schmuck.

Im about 3/4's done with 222 which is the instrument course.

I'm having a great time with it, just logged 1.5 of actual tonight, but I'm gettin antsy to move into the arrow.

LOL Instrument rating eh?
wink.gif

Now I see the importance of getting things done early, lol!

Just kidding with ya Matt!

Lots of skeeters here. One time in 325 it was summer and i shut the door and there were so many skeeters in the plane we were squishing them for 5 minutes before starting the airplane.

Summer flying is good though, weather is usually very good so you can get a lot done.
