Take my $39.00 and do something useful instead of bombarding me with 1,000 lbs of JUNK MAIL EVERY WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't mind supporting GA and AOPA but enough with the damn mail. Use that money and actually pay some lobbyists or bribe some senators or whatever you do to protect GA, instead of spending millions of dollars mailing crap to people that already support the cause.

I actually sent em an e-mail and requested to be taken off their mailing list (except the magazine).

Haven't received anything except magazines and renewal bills for the past year.

I'm not even an AOPA member (nor do I care to be) and I get junk mail from them every week too. Everything from cc offers to a pre-approved membership.

A pre-approved membership? To the AOPA? That'd would be great if the AOPA denied people membership. It'd be like a personal punch in the face from Phil Boyer.

I guess that is the best way to describe it. :D

I never filled out any paperwork for an AOPA membership and I get mail stating that all I have to do is send them whatever it is they sent me to activate a membership.

AOPA lost me 3 months after I started working towards my PPL. I got a call from King Schools (very aggressively) offering my their DVDs. I politely turned them down and then asked how they got my number. They told me they buy the list of all new AOPA members.

All fine and dandy, except I had very specifically checked the box that said I did not want my name sold to any other organizations. It took me about a week of phone calls to reach the head of member services at AOPA and she even pulled my membership request card and said that yes, I had in fact checked the box but AOPA's policy was to sell the names to King School's anyways because they still thought it might be useful for me.

I canceled my membership that day.

They lost me for renewal about a year ago. I hadn't sent in the money and got "the call".

So, I asked "what is AOPA doing to protect GA against user fees and the big money lobbyists?"

"We're outreaching to our members to ask you to write a letter to your congressman."

"rrrrrrrrright, but what is AOPA doing?"

"We're trying to get our members to write their congressmen."

"...but what is AOPA doing?"

"Getting members to write their congressmen."

"ya know, I think I'll pass this time. Thanks for the call...buh bye."

Something like that.

I haven't joined AOPA, but I am already kind of annoyed by getting offers every single week to join. I don't need the free hat that bad.

Not to start an argument or anything but...

If you refuse to do anything, what do you expect AOPA to do?

An Association is its members. Phil Boyer can scream "our members want this" until he's blue in the face but until your congressman hears from you it doesn't mean much.

Since you asked: Because of my Father in law's position within his company, he has some very good contacts just about everywhere (locally - city, county, part of the state, a few of the Washington gentlemen).

I not only was able to write to elected officials, I had lunch/meeting with two of them. This was all prior to this phone call.

I know where my local politicians stand...if they are voted out of office, I should have the ability to meet with their replacements over lunch/golf and get the information I need.

So, no...I didn't refuse to do anything. I merely wanted to know what this organization was going to do to help. That's why I was a member. Now that I know their main focus is having their members write letters, I don't feel the need to waste (lack of a better term) $40 a year.

What do I expect AOPA to do? More than tell me to do something I've already done. Instead of spending the $40 on Jet-A for the CJ or new CDs on runway incursions or 50 pounds of junk mail every week, maybe they could spend some of that money lobbying in Washington.

There's only so much I (or any one of us) can do over a 40 minute lunch or 3 hour round of golf that's going to make a politician understand how important this is to his constituents...myself included. We need help, that's why we have these organizations.

It got to the point that I was seeing ATP and Jet U ads in their magazine and that was enough for me. They seem to want me back real bad, but I just put them on the ignore list on my email, so I'm done with them.

I'm sticking with EAA, though, as they are more grass rootsy, and more down to earth. I like that they support the young eagles program.

Well, yeah. I have an autofuel STC they invented. They have been supporting youth in aviation for 20 years. The magazine is nice. And they have local chapters where you can engage in all the socialization you can handle.

Awesome. I used to try to help out with the young eagle stuff any time they had it. I think they did it 2-3 times a year here. Been a while...
