Re: here\'s one guy who finally got his

I took accutane while recieving flight training as well. No side effects for me, got rid of the persistent mild acne and is a great drug. Ive been off it for about 4 months now and never had a prob.

then you've never had to be around people when they are off these medications. When you've seen what bipolar disorder can do to a person's life, letalone an entire family then you start to realize that some of these drugs are miracle drugs.

[/ QUOTE ]

You don't know me or my motivations for getting involved in this area. And I don't feel like getting into it on this forum.

[ QUOTE ]
but I don't believe it's the place of "concerned citizens" to be calling for the banning of these drugs

[/ QUOTE ]

Believe me the FDA and the medical profession, not to mention the "government" in general, greatly appreciates your position. In fact it's safe to say they count on it. And I personally don't care about banning drugs. In fact I am quite ambivalent about the FDA. I don't think things could possibly be any worse (and probably a lot better) if there were no FDA and citizens simply became informed consumers.

[ QUOTE ]
In the same cases with various drugs, you are going to have people that do not react well to them. More than that, I feel that many of the connections drawn with drugs like acutane are spurrious at best. You are going to have people that are ALREADY suicidal on these drugs, and when they do kill themselves people start playing the blame game and will point fingers at whatever they can.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well I can tell you've put a lot of thought into it and really dug into the whole Accutane controversy. Speaking of reactions wouldn't it be nice if consumers knew so they could make an informed decision? And I'm not talking about the whispered, rapid fire speeches at the end of commercials. I'm talking about doctors giving the straight scoop.

[ QUOTE ]
The drug company's and the FDA are one thing; but I can't believe that you'd make the assertion that doctors would knowing perscribe medications that might get a patient hurt and/or killed.

[/ QUOTE ]

They do it every day, of course. Many of these powerful medications have side effects that include death. Are you kidding? That's not even the point. The point is telling people about it. If you don't want to know, fine. Trust your doctor. I don't. With most of these psychotropics being prescribed like candy, without adequate screening or follow-up, why should they be trusted? They aren't doing their job to start with.

I love doctors. They've saved two of my kid's lives. They have also almost killed or severly injured two of my kids and likely would have if we hadn't intervened. So my attitude is to be an informed consumer of medical care. And by the way, if I decide not to take a medicine or get a procedure for me or my family, it's my decision and my responsibility and I won't be "suing" anybody over it. If they force me to do something or lie to me (as has happened) I'll be all over them.

hehe, I know what you're talkin about. Those practices in high school where I had a cold and was on something were some of my best practices ever. Though I started drinking those Snapple Element Fire drinks before each game, those got me so wired that I couldn't even concentrate. My mind would be in an entirely different place for most of the game. Not a good idea.

[/ QUOTE ]

no joke? i used to down one of those before a hockey game for the same reason. i couldn't when i played goal because i was too wired to stay in the crease and be content, i had to roam (could be the fact that i'm a natural center and the only thing i can do well is skate).

Re: here\'s one guy who finally got his

We're probably not going to agree on this one, that's fine. I'm also speaking from my background in the area and I understand that you don't want to explain your entire life to try to justify what you're saying: I feel the same way.

I'll have to give that Snapple Element Fire drink a whirl--do they still make it?

I've got some teamattes who usually down an advil or 2 before game to get loosened up. Others prefer to toss in a chewski. I just prefer a gatorade/powerade before hand, maybe a Fuze. Can't sacrifice concentration for being wired!

Yup, they still make it, and they finally put it into an aluminum bottle instead of a glass one. Had a couple of those break open in my hockey bag, loads of fun. I tried drinking gatorade before the game but usually before the first period is over I'm about to wet myself, so that quickly stopped.

Re: here\'s one guy who finally got his

i can't drink gatorade or powerade while i'm playng. i feel weighed down and like i can't get a deep breath. i only drink cool water while playing. gatorade afterwards to recover.

hey, do you play intramurals up here? I'm the goalie for the ardvarks this year, played for the Bek bastards the past few seasons (we sucked).

Re: here\'s one guy who finally got his

Dude, I was so pumped when I took some Sudafed that it was like, what the hell are you on, Tony.

I was a little too pumped. I think I got like four penalties that game!

wtf? i played for the bek bastards a couple times last year. i'm not playing this semester a) because i'm graduating and leaving at the end of the month and b) because i have this chronic tonsillitis and i can't breathe and i'm sick all the time. it's really crappy. i skated once this summer at home and thought i was going to die.

i thought the bek goalie's name was joe? he's in aviation too, but i don't think you're joe.

edit: my real team last year was mission impossible. we went to the finals in D2 but lost.

Sudafed is a brand of medication they use to make meth here in the meth capital of the country (or world). That stuff has the opposite effect on me. Benedryl or Sudafed will pretty much knock me out for 4 to 6 hours.
