Re: here\'s one guy who finally got his

then you've never had to be around people when they are off these medications. When you've seen what bipolar disorder can do to a person's life, letalone an entire family then you start to realize that some of these drugs are miracle drugs.

You don't know me or my motivations for getting involved in this area. And I don't feel like getting into it on this forum.

but I don't believe it's the place of "concerned citizens" to be calling for the banning of these drugs
[/ QUOTE ]
Believe me the FDA and the medical profession, not to mention the "government" in general, greatly appreciates your position. In fact it's safe to say they count on it. And I personally don't care about banning drugs. In fact I am quite ambivalent about the FDA. I don't think things could possibly be any worse (and probably a lot better) if there were no FDA and citizens simply became informed consumers.
[ QUOTE ]
In the same cases with various drugs, you are going to have people that do not react well to them. More than that, I feel that many of the connections drawn with drugs like acutane are spurrious at best. You are going to have people that are ALREADY suicidal on these drugs, and when they do kill themselves people start playing the blame game and will point fingers at whatever they can.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well I can tell you've put a lot of thought into it and really dug into the whole Accutane controversy. Speaking of reactions wouldn't it be nice if consumers knew so they could make an informed decision? And I'm not talking about the whispered, rapid fire speeches at the end of commercials. I'm talking about doctors giving the straight scoop.
[ QUOTE ]
The drug company's and the FDA are one thing; but I can't believe that you'd make the assertion that doctors would knowing perscribe medications that might get a patient hurt and/or killed.
[/ QUOTE ]
They do it every day, of course. Many of these powerful medications have side effects that include death. Are you kidding? That's not even the point. The point is telling people about it. If you don't want to know, fine. Trust your doctor. I don't. With most of these psychotropics being prescribed like candy, without adequate screening or follow-up, why should they be trusted? They aren't doing their job to start with.
I love doctors. They've saved two of my kid's lives. They have also almost killed or severly injured two of my kids and likely would have if we hadn't intervened. So my attitude is to be an informed consumer of medical care. And by the way, if I decide not to take a medicine or get a procedure for me or my family, it's my decision and my responsibility and I won't be "suing" anybody over it. If they force me to do something or lie to me (as has happened) I'll be all over them.
