Federal investigators questioning six Middle Eastern men removed from flight at MSP Updated: 11/20/2006 08:39:47 PM
Print Story | Email to a Friend 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has learned that federal investigators and airport police are questioning six Middle Eastern men who had to be escorted off of a plane Monday afternoon at Minneapolis/St. Paul International.

U.S. Airway officials tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS Aviation Expert Bob McNaney that Monday while Flight 300 was preparing to take off from Minneapolis to Phoenix, a passenger passed a note to a flight attendant saying they noticed 'suspicious behavior,' among the men.

The men would not get off the plane when asked, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has learned, and had to be removed by police.

Just think! Kristie and I just arrived back in PHX this evening and we were on the (movie guy's voice).... razorrrrrrs edge of deathhhh....

But we were on UAL.

So now, a little more information comes out.....

The six Muslim scholars were returning from a conference in Minneapolis of the North American Imams Federation, said Shahin, president of the group. Five of them were from the Phoenix-Tempe area, while one was from Bakersfield, Calif., he said.

#1 Three of them stood and said their normal evening prayers together on the plane, as 1.7 billion Muslims around the world do every day, Shahin said. #2 He attributed any concerns by passengers or crew to ignorance about Islam.

#1 So Aunt Bessie overreacted in the concern for the flight. My question would be why couldn't this have been done in the airport. I realize that may draw attention as well, but it would not have been on a plane getting ready to push back or takeoff. In one article it stated that the Imams were so concerned about their meeting that they informed the FBI of their presence in the area. Are there no exceptations that allow for the adjustment of time in the event you cannot make the regular 'times'?

#2 The crew and some passengers may have been ignorant in regards to Islam, but I would think that if the Imams were so worried about their presence and informed the FBI, they would also know that their actions would draw unwanted attention.

We have several muslims at work. They all pray together in our really huge equipment locker/vault that faces east.

I understand & respect the muslim culture and their need to pray to Allah 5 times a day. But with the US dehumanization of muslims and the attack on their culture & religion this definately wasn't the time or place to draw attention to themselves.

Max, do you think it would have been any different if they were in the U.K. and it happened? Probably not.

I was just thinking that if they were concerned enough to inform the FBI of their presence in Minneapolis (a city with many Muslims), they would be well aware that their actions (right or wrong) would draw some unwanted attention.

Btw, why are you still awake? You were done with work a long time ago. Go to sleep. Only 50 minutes to go, w00t!!!

No wouldn't have been a different reaction in any western country.

As for me...goin to bed now. I can't go right to bed when I get home too much energy. Besides I had to watch Heroes and all my DVR'd shows for the day!

:)

I believe that "if possible" they need to pray a certain number of times daily, so, if they are on an airplane & they can not pray, then it would be acceptable to miss the prayer exercise.

Attack on their culture? Give me a break, the Muslims are their own worst enemy, while not every Muslim is a terrorist, however, Muslims are "perceived" as Terrorists.

Now to make matters worse, these Imans resisted arrest, guess what the passengers are going to remember from that flight (I wonder how they were dressed)?

Also, if they were going to pray as a group, they knew better than that.

Wanna see hypocrisy in action, try to whip out your Bible, strap on your Rosary beads & pray on a flight between "2" Countries in the Middle East.

When travelling to Middle East Countries such as Saudi Arabia, it is strongly suggested to not bring a Bible.

Regardless of what color they are, or what religion they are...if a group of guys stands up on an airplane and start praying outload to Allah, God, [SIZE=-1]Jesus, Buddha, whoever...it's gonna make me nervous.

these Imans resisted arrest quote]

Rosa Parks did the same thing and we now consider her a hero for it.

Comparing apples to oranges, how Black Terrorist have you heard of, prior to the Rosa Parks protest?

Problem is, people are comfortable around Muslim people due to the actions of terrorist for the past 50 years.

Funny how they shout out Allah to pray & when they turn into a suicide bomber.

Want people to be more comfortable, tell the terrorist to stop blowing stuff up.

Now, before getting up to pray, they could have asked the Flight Attendant if it was ok....

Sorry, I just feel bad for these guys. Obviously some passengers were ignorant to the practices of Muslims. If I had seen them praying in the aisle, I wouldn't have thought anything of it - but then again, I'm not a moron. At the very least, the crew should have had the intelligence to know that Muslim's pray several times a day. If anything, they could have just asked. I'm sure they would have been more than happy to explain. It's not like they were trying to light their shoes on fire. I'm not super into civil disobedience, but these guys are right - they were treated in a way that wasn't necessary. Kudos to them for putting up a fight.

Haven't heard of black terrorists? Ever heard of a drive-by?

#1 the individuals should have known that given the current state of affairs in the U.S. You do not stand up in an airplane and start praying. They were concerned enough to alert the FBI to their meeting, they sure knew that standing up in an airplane would have caused unwanted attention.

#2 Happy to explain....Yea, O.k. you mean like the ease they left the plane with? O.K.

#3 Putting up a fight, yea that will solve everything.

#4 Drive by, Terrorost activity....Two different things...

I'm guessing the Immans got exactly the response they were hoping for.

The good news is they weren't Christians trying to do this in a Religion of Peace ruled country. Beheading wouldn't be too intolerant for them in that case.
