Hemochromatosis?

For those on the forum that do not know about hemochromatosis, here is a link for your reading http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/hemochromatosis/index.htm

Regarding being able to fly, the answer is YES. However, the FAA considers that hemochromatosis falls into the group of blood forming diseases and the state for Other disease of the blood or blood-forming tissues that could adversely affect performance of airman duties the applicant must Submit a current status report and all pertinent medical reports to the FAA and issuing a certificate Requires FAA Decision. This is the Special Issuance process. If you have questions regarding Special Issuance, you can go to http://www.faaspecialissuance.com. Basically, they will want to know what your serum iron levels are and have documentation that you are having no adverese effects of the disease. They wil then ask you to provide a periodic report to them regarding your serum iron. Obviously,as with any other disease, if you develop symptoms you are obligated to ground yourself until the disease is again stable.

Enjoy flying:)

Thanks for the info and quick reply. I didn't know if phlebotomy (sp?) treatment would in itself be a disqualifying factor. But it's good to know it doesn't automatically make you lose your medical. Thanks again for your time.

Phlebotomy should not be a disqualifying factor since it is the standard of care. I don't know what the FAA will set as the requirements (maybe no flying with an iron or ferritin above XXX) but I think they will grant a Special Issuance.
