Help fixing headset.

This is not another "what headset should I get" thread!

I bought a Telex Stratus 50D from a JC member a few months ago (who seemed to only have joined JC to sell the headset). He disclosed up front the battery case lid was broken - no problem - I just tape it shut.

The headset worked great for about a month, but then even with fresh batteries in it, the ANR lasts only 5 minutes before the low battery light comes on, and 5 minutes after, that the ANR goes out.

I've contacted Telex, and they said without proof of purchase it costs a flat rate of $350 to fix.

Any Telex owners out there have this happen to them?

Any smart people know of an easy/ cheap fix for this?

If you are comfortable with electronics, open it up and check to if what ever broke the battery door didn't loosen something up that is now causing a short and drainign teh battery.
try hooking up a battery, turning them on and feeling the wires for the battery for heat. if they get hot, or the battery gets hot fast, you have a short.

Headsets are pretty simple, as far as electronics go. It is probably just a loose wire, as stated earlier. Get a 15w soldering iron and some small diameter rosin core solder, and some flux paste, and it should be a simple repair. All of that can be bought at Radio Shack for less than $20 total.

If you make sure the solder is "Rosin Core" you shouldn't need the flux paste. it will depend on how dirty the solder pads are though. A light brushing of the area with isopropyl alcohol with a toothbrush (preferably a never to be used again one) before soldering should do just fine. Of course you will want to make sure the board is dry before putting the heat to it.
