Two men escaped uninjured from a hard crash just south of the Hillsboro airport Friday night, police said.
A Hillsboro fire crew responded on reports of the crash about 8:40 p.m. and found a Robinson R22 chopper on its side. There was no fire, said Storm Smith, a fire spokesman.
The pilot told responders he was approaching the airport, realized he was losing power and tried to make an emergency landing in a field just east of the Washington County Fairgrounds.
The helicopter landed hard and flipped onto its left side. Both the 29-year-old pilot and his 45-year-old passenger escaped without injuries. The aircraft suffered moderate damage.
The Federal Aviation Administration arrived at the scene about 10 p.m. to investigate the crash.
