Headsets at the Regionals?

I had the same headset for piston/turboprop flying and highly recommend them.
 
Don't be the guy sitting in the right seat of the RJ with his duct-taped nasty-white Peltors that's been limped along for the last few years because "I just can't afford anything else."

Listen to me now, hear me later:

Invest NOW in a good quality headset. It's your hearing. It's something you'll be using every day. It really makes me snicker when a guy says he just can't afford a good headset, something he'll use every day at work, and then think nothing at buying a season pass at his favorite ski hill, used only a dozen weekends a year?? bah!

The Bose is good- I've seen a handful of 737 guys actually using them. The DC 10-13XL ENC is good, too. I've owned them both. 10 years later, I'm still using the DC in GA. I'm using a Sennheiser lightweight ANR headset in the 737 right now- sometimes I'll use my Bose QC2/UFlyMike combo if I know the other guy has one, too.

Anybody try that new DC headset?
 
Hey Cheechako, betchya a dollar even after the testimony of several professional pilots (and a flight attendant), we'll get at least two "Yeah, but..."'s! ;)

Protect your hearing folks. It does not come back.
 
Had the DC's when I was instructing and they were a great fit for me. When I got hired I used them for about a month in the RJ. A captain let me try his BOSE X for 1 leg. It was like night and day. Like many mentioned b4 the RJ cockpit is not as quiet as I thought it would be. I spent about $400-500 on a Telex ANR set and it was well worth it. Can't quite convince the Mrs. to shell out $1000 for the BOSE. Keep your hearing.
 
The Telex 750 can normally be found on ebay for abound $100. It has no noise canceling features, but is very comfortable to wear. The Telex 850 has ENC and is pretty light weight but cost around $600. I think in the near future I am going to move up to the 850s or the Senhieser (sp). The plan was to wait until upgrade to do it, but I think my hearing is suffering too much in the mean time to wait.
 
I have a set of DC non ANR headsets and I love them. I have a friend who has a bose which I tried, and I have to be honest, but I did not see a $1,000 difference. I will be stickin' with my DCs :)
 
I'm using a set of DC 10-30's, that I don't think will protect my hearing for more than 6 months inside of an RJ or TP cockpit.

They'll be used as a transition from CFIing, to first few months before I can determine which are best for me.

I'm glad this topic comes up every once in a while. Otherwise I'd never know which Telex, or Sennheiser headset is best.

If you don't wear noise attenuating headsets, you will develop hearing loss.

Don't try and play stud with something small and cutesy that you saw some DC-9 driver wearing, but make a conscious effort to protect your hearing in that cockpit.

I think it's even louder than a 727, but I'm not sure.

That's interresting. I'm comming out of a Seminole and I thought the CRJ is pretty quiet, but I don't have many other jets to compare to. I have seen quite a few CRJ pilots with the in ear type though. I guess I'll stick with my X-11.

Jumpseat a MD-88 or a 76 one day and you'll see bro! ;)

Even though you don't have that ear-itching rumble of a turboprop, the noise in the CRJ/737-700/800/727/etc will make you just as deaf.

Protect that hearing! Trust me.

If you have to raise your voice to communicate, chances are that the environmental noise is gradually destroying your hearing.

what headset do you use?
 
I have a telex 5x5 with a custom molded earpiece.

Works great! But with flying international and having to crank up COM1 and crank it up when I'm talking on HF to understand what they're saying, I'm sure it's wrecking the hearing in my right ear.

I'd ONLY suggest a single earpiece in a super quiet cockpit like a mad dog or a 767.

Just because an aircraft has a jet engine doesn't automatically mean the cockpit is going to be quiet.
 
So is there a general consensus of DC or Telex for a better ANR headset? I was looking at the DC 10-13X/XL and they look good but the XL is $80 more and I can't see much of a difference between the 2. Any comments on those? Is the XL worth the extra price?

I just don't want to buy a nice ENC headset now and then find out I'll want/need a better one when I hit the regionals.
 
Boy, oh boy, I used the Telex 750 in the RJ for about three weeks. . . couldn't stand 'em! The noise level in that blasted airplane down low is crazy. The 737 is a little better, but the wind noise. Especially going fast at the lower altitudes (from what I understand, it's real loud doing 330 at 1500' along the beach in SE Alaska. . .) anyways, at the end of three or four days of flying, I was tired and irritated in the CRJ. The noise really takes a toll.

Are the 850's much better?

And while the Telex 500's are substantially larger, has anyone tried them? They appear as if they would provide a bit more protection, passive-wise due to their full ear coverage, as well as built in ANR.
 
The CRJ wouldn't be so bad if they could get avionics fans that don't sound deafening. That's the main problem with the noise in the CRJ.

The 850s are on the list, right behind the bills, the mortgage and food. So, really, I can't afford them right now.
 
I use DC 13.4's in the CRJ and sometimes we take them off because on a long leg its annoying. I do use earplugs though along with my headsets and I NEVER take them out. I wanna hear in 5 years. THe greatest thing about earplugs is when you run out ask a ramper for a few, Im sure hell give you a ton.

I feel bad for the 145 guys, sticking a brasilla front on a Jet.

I asked this at some store here, and said 'what if you wear earplugs with the headset?' and he laughed at me and said 'how are you going to hear the radio if you got earplugs on?'

it made sense. I guess he was wrong?
